Split Signal from Quad LNB

Hi All,

I currently have Sky+ installed downstairs in my living room. It's connected to a Quad LNB up on an awkward place on the roof. I have a second Sky+ box upstairs and would like to use it to just purely watch TV...i'm not fussed with any of the PVR functions (unless it's possible).

Now i know that most of you guys will most likely tell me to just get on to the awkward place on the roof and run a cable from the sky dish to the second box... but to make things easier, I was wondering if it is at all possible to split the signal from ONE of the cables in order to give signal to the second box upstairs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If this isn't possible, would it be possible to just plug a new cable in to the correct output on the LNB and in to the input on the second sky box.

Thanks,

because the sky contractor put it in an awkward place :P

to be honest it probably isn't all that awkward at all. so running a cable from the LNB is the best solution? I plan on purchasing one of sky's free to air viewing cards. So ultimately, i will only be using the sky+ box to watch the tv.. rather than recording it. However, would it be possible to run a third cable from the LNB in to the sky box and use the sky+ PVR functions without paying the £10 a month subscription?

I think your best option at the moment would be to pay the £10 per month multiroom subscription, you wouldn't have to pay for the extra £20 for the FreesatfromSky card then.

At some point, the proper Freesat will be releasing boxes with PVR functionality, when they become available you could ditch the multiroom and buy a Freesat PVR.

Another option of course is to buy a FTA PVR, which are currently available.

Robbo,

I considered the multiroom option and decided against it simply because the cost for someone from Sky to come out and install it on top of the £10 a month would be more than i'm willing to pay right now. A one off £20 seems like the better option in the mean time, especially when I can install this myself for next to nothing too.

The PVR functionality isn't a huge deal right now either... I simply want to use this as a way to watch TV right now. (My house doesn't have a standard TV aerial... so Satellite is my only option) I'm sure when Freesat HD with PVR functionality becomes available (at a price i can afford) i'll ditch Sky for it... but until then, I think free-to-air from Sky is my best option.

Hi All

Just a quick update... I ran a cable direct from the LNB and in to my old Sky+ box... with the old card still in there, i now have FREESAT from sky...

HOWEVER, I decided to give the old 'record' button a push on the remote to see if it actually works....

...It does. Now I Only have one satellite cable plugged in, which means i can only record what I'm watching. Regardless, the PVR functions seem to actually work. It must be something on the old Sky+ card allowing the box to use those functions.

I am slightly worried in case Sky decide to start charging me for using this even though the card hasn't be used in months and I only pay for the Sky+ subscription downstairs. After all, I am only received the FTA and FTV channels. Should I worry? Or just be happy that I have FREESAT from sky with FREE PVR Functions

Thanks,

Nigel

My System: Mostly gathering dust cos I'm a lazy git. Porty dish face blew off the mount, not too pleased...

The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken!

It could be the "I'm getting free subscription channels" thing where you probably switched off the box before sky had a chance to turn off the function and the card's still set to allow recording, that is until the next Keep alive signal hits it and it'll probably go, but you never know...

I'll keep you all updated on what happens

At the minute, Live pause only seems to work with FTA channels and NOT FTV channels... and at the minute, the only FTV channels I have are Channel 4 or 5 (or 5 US or 5 Life and all that jazz). Recording works otherwise...

..I'll let you know if anything changes.

Thanks,

Nigel
