Possibly this book?

I've read it a couple of times, the most recently about 10 years ago. A fascinating (well, to me anyway) and even handed (for a couple of Americans) history of the English language and its many forms nowadays, including British, American, Irish, Australian, Indian, Pidgin and probably more than I can remember.

I'll have to make a trip to the library and get it out again now!
