Yes, I've had to put the user choke on, it'll prevent the server from falling over.

You can blame it on D+.

No, I've taken it off now, made some other changes, but we cannot make any significant remedies for five or six weeks due to physical space at our server host.

This is true, i was wondering myself... i suspect it was when Rolf was doing his best to lighten the load on the server....maybe he turned it off.

the forum still seems to be slow at peak times still, i was struggling earlier.

I have turned off the list of who's online at the bottom of the index page (it still shows the stats though), as it is very server intensive, if you want to see who's around, then go to the quick links and who's online, as it will only load for those who request it specifically.

We are looking at a second server, but cannot see that it will be installed for a few weeks yet due to our host moving premises. So we may well have to suffer a little up until that date (perhaps with a few more server saving measures), at least it is only periodic slowdowns at the moment.

Any chance of trying to channel the majority of the recent heavy use traffic one way or the other at all ??

i must say the last few weeks has seen a massive increase in traffic (so it seems) hopefully everthing will be smoother later(after improvements )

May I suggest having things like Uploaded Images and Avatars being turned off or reduced temporarly as you wait for the server hosts to move house and get a new server installed? That should reduce the load on the servers as it'll be clearing the bandwidth used by all the images downloading every time someone opens a thread...

Just a suggestion of course...

As far as I've been led to believe, it isn't bandwidth which is the problem, it is queries on the SQL database which is causing these slowdowns, the images are being called from the hard drive direct. We can have 3000 guests online who are all calling up images, but as soon as we get to three or four hundred members, the load increases.

Not too long to wait, only until the end of May and it will all be sorted.

My System: 28e, 19e, 13e, 30w

I have a habit of opening up several windows at the same time - often from the same site (I acquired this habit while on dialup). I see a load of threads/articles that interest me and let them all load in the background whilst reading the first one.

I'm guessing it's not such a good idea having multiple pages from the site loading at the same time so I'm going to fall out of this habit!

The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken!

I have multiple windows open, but they're for different sites/forums, I only usually have 1 window per forum, unless I'm having a bit of a PM'ing session...

As for the SQL requests, can't you limit what guests can see so that they don't create so many requests and save the requests for the members? Or is it because the server is a 486DX/2(66MHz)???

The guests do not seem to affect the server load too greatly, it is only logged on members. We have trimmed pretty much all we can for the moment, so really all we can do is hang on. See Does this site seem faster ??? for the old server spec, we will be keeping this but migrating the main workload to the new server.
