can't edit my own posts.

I've just tried to update one of my "guides" - specifically, "signals, noise, digital errors" - and discovered I can't! There's no "edit" button when I login, although I can still reply to posts.

Same goes for my HDTV Guide. Presumably, everything else too .......

Well ok, hardly anyone reads this stuff, but would be nice to update!

Thanks, Rolfw.

It's time limited for all but moderators, spiney. There doesn't appear to be a way of changing this for one member, but what you could do is copy and paste the original post into a new one and edit that, I can then delete the original, or update it for you..

Hang on, Rolf, that's a VERY BIG change in access permissions! It's going to make updating very difficult and tedious.

Why this sudden change?

It isn't a change, it has always been the case. there is a 1 day limit, after which only a moderator can edit a post.

Rolf, I'm afraid that's incorrect!

Up till today, I've regularly updated my guides using the "edit post" button, which has always worked, even a year after the original post (eg, my multiswitch guide). However, this morning, that facility suddenly vanished!

If you say the only way to now update is make multiple posts, then that's what I'll have to do, although it's very messy! However, to say the software "always did that" is false.

Sorry! But, there it is .....

OK, will check it later, it always used to be the case, but may have been left off when the new vB version was uploaded by Chris and the ommission rectified over the past couple of days.

Haven't got time now as have to do some work.

Back now, put off job until tomorrow, decided to have the day off.

Yes, sorry, the setting always was 24 hours, so as to prevent users from going back to old posts and inserting keys or files. But i guess that Chris noticed that it had not been set and rectified the situation.

Will try and sort out an alternative solution.

Can you link to all of the threads you require updating please.

I only update my "guides" on an ad hoc basis, not regularly.

Quite happy to update by multiple new posts, and let forums admin delete older versions.

Rolf, I'm sorry, but what you keep on saying above is COMPLETELY WRONG!

What actually happened was ......

1) The 1st "guide" I did was the multiswitch one. Put in the FAQs section, under "Members' input", which is read/write to most members.

2) At one point, somebody - I forget who - said "have read the mutiswitch guide, was very useful, so am making a small donation ......."

3) Just after this, my multiswitch guide was suddenly moved to "tutorials" in FAQs, which is a read only section (for most members).

4) This meant I couldn't update it, so I asked for either that section to be made temporarily "write enabled", or else some other arrangement made available.

5) I think Rolf said "done". After which, I found not only could I always update my multiswitch guide, but I could also update any of my other posts, no matter how old they were! This happened - I think - about 10 months ago.

6) 2 days ago, this suddenly changed. The "edit post" buttons no longer appear on my old posts, whenever I log in (as now claimed, editing is possible for about a day, but that wan't true 2 days ago).

Whether this applied to all members - or was just an unnoticed "funny" on my login account - I can't say, but must certainly it has just been changed!

What I was saying was that the settings in force now are what should have been correct and what I believed were in force, when they were relaxed to allow ongoing editing I do not know, I seem to remember changing the permissions on the FAQ section, but that is something entirely different.

I can't understand why it has only changed in the last couple of days, as it should have been the default, I haven't changed it and neither has Chris, as I asked him this morning.

But any way, the net result is that this is how it is supposed to be and I can't work out how it was any other way, as these type of settings are normally preset on any forum updates, but it obviously was.

OK, I accept the current restriction is what's "supposed to be" (maybe the previous anomoly was a "bad security loophole"?!).

However, now it's very difficult to update. If I post a "newest" new version, this will go at the end of the thread (on most "views"), and Forum admin will then have to delete all previous ones.

Isn't there any way round this? Ingenuity ........

Post the new one and I will paste it into the original post. Just PM or page me when it needs doing.

Well, all the alternatives are fraught ..........

What I'll do is date each new version, at the top, and say "please check the date"! Then, what forums admin to to tidy up is up to them ......

Anyway, thanks Rolfw, for repeatedly answering.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear (as Tony Hancock used to say).

Well, Rolf, I've posted a newer (slightly updated) HDTV primer

( HDTV Primer ).

Unfortunately, now I find I can't re-post my "digital signals" post, so can't provide a more complete or finished version !

(I could start a new thread, would that be the best way round this problem?).

( Signals, noise, digital errors ... all that stuff. ).

add a post to it with nothing but the minimum words in it and I will copy the base text into it, then you can amend and add to it.

Do you want me to replace the first one mentioned with the edited version?

If you copy both to a notepad file, then you can play around with them at your leisure.

You can use this BB code editor to work on files for pasting into the forum. Setup BBCodeWriter_6_4_1.zip

Rolf .......

Becasue the forums software has been (albeit unintentionally!) changed, I can't now re-edit existing posts, which was always possible up until you fitted the new servers!

With my "HDTV primer", I would be grateful if you could make my yesterday's post of newest version the first one in thread (for the default user settings), then people can see it says "please check the date", and look for any later versions futher below, if they want to.

My "signals noise" guide can't be updated, but I could post a new thread in that section, if that's the best way to update.

My "multiswitch" guide is in a read only setion, and now completely inaccessible.

All this is making doing any updates very tedious and awkward.

(I can't really ask admin to keep on pasting stuff "ad hoc", there's really got to be some sort of "agreed" solution which, however clumsy, allows me to post updates. Unless, of course, you don't want any!).

(ps, nice pic of servers, I miss those 19 inch racks!).

Well ..... says Spiney cautiously .... I've got the Edit button back in all 3 places, just like it used to be!

Haven't tried yet, but this would seem fine. But, is it a permanent solution, or just temporary?
