New law likey to end P2P file sharing in the UK?

" The Government will create legislation forcing internet service providers (ISPs) to gather information on customers engaged in illegal file-sharing, and forcing them to contact repeat offenders warning them that their behaviour is against the law.

The proposal forms part of an interim report, Digital Britain. The proposed legislation stops short of forcing ISPs to directly disconnect suspected file-sharers.

"Our response to the consultation on peer-to-peer file sharing sets out our intention to legislate, requiring ISPs to notify alleged infringers of rights (subject to reasonable levels of proof from rights- holders) that their conduct is unlawful," said the report. "We also intend to require ISPs to collect anonymised information on serious repeat infringers (derived from their notification activities), to be made available to rights-holders together with personal details on receipt of a court order."

The Government said that it would soon begin consultation on the proposed new law."

Bit of a misleading title there, many legitimate file sharing is carried out between companies and employees on remote PCs using P-to-P networking.

Also no clue the stage at which the investigation is at, before an 'interim' report, prior to legislation designed to 'warn' repeat offenders.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

Governments are great at introducing legislation to regulate what regular Joes' and small business do. Had they extend that to fat cat bankers and big money men we might not be in the mess we find ourselves in now.

It is, as always, a good try and, as always, too late.

I think that someday the Gov (and the music industry) will understand that laws won´t work.

Make it easy and cheap to download and business would prospere

They are asking too much money for a CD or a video

They must learn to set a nice price or they will die I am sure.

Pirates are always (at least) one step ahead.

They tried copy protection and how long did that work ???

They must meat the market even if it makes them poorer

Most people don't want to part with their money.
They want everything for free if they can get away with it.
Even if they make the price rock bottom, they still won't pay for it.
So they might as well keep the CD and DVD prices as high as possible, as there is always those who are willing to pay for it.
