BBC dismisses Top Up TV’s Chance

The BBC has hit back at comments made by Top-Up TV chairman David Chance over the feature set of Freeview boxes. Chance told the Broadcasting Press Guild that many Freeview purchasers became frustrated when they realised that their choice of set-top box could not be upgraded to receive the Top-Up TV package. He also criticised the nature of the BBC’s campaigns to encourage digital take-up. In a statement the Corporation said that the purpose of the BBC's digital advice campaigns was to tell viewers how they can get the BBC's extra channels, and importantly to let them know how they can get them without paying a monthly subscription. "Contrary to Top Up TV's claims, our own extensive research and feedback from these campaigns provides no evidence that people feel they have been misled by this message.” It said the success of Freeview demonstrates the appeal of the no subscription message.
