My System: I am a newbie and haven't bought a satellite system yet. PC *Athlon AM2 64 X2 4200+ *Foxconn A6VMX *4GB PC6400 OCZ Gold 5-5-5-15 *Arctic Cooling (AC-FRZ-64P) Freezer64 Pro *Geforce 9400GT 512MB- PCI-E *Samsung Spinpoint F1-500GB SATA II *Hi
Question Diablo/Patches

I hope this question is in the right section as it sort of covers two areas.

My situation is this. I live in the Midlands and will soon be having my first satellite system installed - 1 metre, motorised dish and a Technmate 5400CI+Super as I want to receive some none FTA channels (mainly for sport including English Premier League football).

This is where I have a problem. Being a newbie, I have no idea if I should be using patches, softcams, Diablo cams or whatever.

Having read around for quite a while, I am assuming that patches/softcams and cams (eg the Diablo) are two different ways of receiving encrypted channels; or will I need a combination of all these to receive the football. If I purchase a Diablo cam (and CAS3+) will I still need to download patches and softcams for my receiver? Which is the best method to use for what I am wanting to watch.

Also, where on earth can I find the relevant files required as I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Any help will be really appreciated.
Thanks

My System: Sky UK. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 6 fixed dishes (5E/7E/9E/10E/13E/16E/ 19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S

For Prem League football you are better off buying a foreign subscription. The sole remaining hackable pay tv provider that provides 3pm kickoffs will soon be going secure - and may have gone by the time your system is set up!.

My System: Sky; Raven 90 multi-LNB 1W, 7E, 9E, 13E 16E, 19E; 1m Orbital dish on Moteck SG2100 motor; Technomate 1500, Phoenix Apollo and Kathrein (analogue) etc etc Receivers

With the TM 5400, I recommend you take one step at a time; first go with the patches and see what mileage is in them; at the moment the patch for the 5400 is still good for football. The risk with it of course is that the main package enjoyed may go at any time.

Assuming the package does go, then it may be worthwhile to consider a Diablo CAM --- which is in fact also assuming that the Diablo itself is still going strong; it too may stop for all we know!

If all fails, consider a foreign subscription from the cheap and cheerful e.g. ART or Digialb to the far more expensive.

Thanks guys, although I don't really understand the stuff about Nagra 3. I thought the whole point of patches and programmable cams was that you are either cracking, or at least working around the encyption.

Its a cat and mouse game between the pay tv provoiders & the cracker guys. At the moment the newest and far more secure encryptions (including Nagra 3) dont have any workarounds. Therefore anything encrypted in Nagra 3 is only acessible via a valid subscription.
