1.5m Offset Vs 1.8m Prime Focus ?

Hi

Need to upgrade from 1m due to dropouts and weak signal on some sats. I have been reading most if not all posts on this forum regarding dish sizes etc. and was inclined on a Gibertini 1.5m offset dish. I prefer offset as these make it possible to mount closer to a wall. If I go for prime focus the mounting location has to be changed. Bit of a hassle, but possible....

Now... Is this Gibertini dish any good?
Will I get a substancial signal gain from 1.8m prime focus? I'm thinking 1.8m prime focus signal minus LNB shadow = 1.5m Offset. Is this correct?

Also been looking for a dish comparison site, but none found. So I seek help from this forums experienced members.

Much obliged.

Cheers

I am sure there are people willing to impart the required knowledge and information but unfortunately you do not say where you are located and what channels are dropping out and from which satellite so all in all it is therefore difficult for anyone to comment without a comparison benchmark.

My location is :
Madeira Island (32.633N/-16.850W)

I can give 7W as an example. I receive that sat at 60 to 65% after sundown but rest of the time at 50%.

tux233 I can certainly understand why when looking at the footprint here Not really a dish expert and therefore unable to advise you personally but being off the west coast of N Africa you are nearer to the footprint than the UK is. Again you mention no channels but we wouldn't have a comparison from here anyhow as we have difficulties with Nilesat (not surprising really) as it covers N Africa and Middle East. If you have done all you possibly can regarding fine tuning then yes a bigger dish will pull in more signal but will require more accurate alignment as well!

Thank you toppervte33h....

I do realize that due to my location, I need a bigger dish. Have been looking at footprints for all the concerned channels/sats/transponders/polarization for some time now.

My question is about what dish upto 1.8m has the best gain. Ideally, for my location, would be 2.4m or even 3m.
So would the 1.5m offset perform as well or better than the 1.8m P.Focus?

Cheers

Why not compromise and get a 1.8 mtr offset ?. It would need to be a good quality one though.

The Channelmaster / Andrews 1.8 offset is good but you pay for what you get.

Didn't know Channel Master had that size offset dishes....nothing on their website.
I have e-mailed them for a EU dealer, but in the meantime could anyone please point me to a site with info on these dishes.

  • Diámetro menor: 1700 mm
  • Material del Disco: Aluminio
  • Tratamiento de la superficie: Epoxi-poliester

The site does not mention the manufacturer. Can anyone identify this dish from the pic. If so, is it as good as advertised?

Thank you all for the replies.

The dish is possibly a Mabo from Poland, but the gain is 1 dB too much and they do not specify their effiency.
Anyhow, this dish has an effiency of 57% when I try it at www.satellite-calculations.com so it might not be your best buy.
Also the measurement you use for comparing is 170cm on this dish.

I heard the Polish dishes are really crap, even worse than the Chinese manufacturers.....

There are good quality European and American manufacturers out there so i would suggest one of them instead.

I only know Mabo as a traditional polish manufacturer and as some friends of mine told me they are quite confident with the 1.85m Offset having them some years in Greece at sea climate conditions without any problems. Surely US made ones are better but i wouldn't call them crappy.
