Hi All,

Hope all's well,
I haven't seen it myself yet but I've read 5W is still broadcasting after it's shutdown date.
Do anyone know what the story will be with 19.2e

Will some channels broadcast right up to the last minute at 2am April 30th 2012?
Will some channels broadcast after that date?

Best,

David

This will get quite interesting come April. There are still over a million people using the analogue signals and hunderds (if not more) cable heads of hotels, hospitals etc. which use the analogue signals. Analogue satellite was very popular here, it practically replaced the terrestrial system (almost noone uses terrestrial TV today).
End of this month (31 Dec 2011) the Viacom channels will stop analogue, also DMAX goes digital only.
Some more channels are expected to leave during the following months.
The main channels' ( ie ARD, ZDF, RTL, Sat1 etc) official switch off date is 30th of April, 3 o'clock in the morning. A few hours later, the new HD services will launch:

Ex-ARD analogue TP will become digital DVB-S2 : ARD HD, arte HD, SWR HD.
Ex-3sat analogue TP will carry DVB-S2: zdf.kultur HD, zdf.info HD, zdf.neo HD.
Ex-NDR analogue TP will carry DVB-S2: NDR HD, BR HD, Phoenix HD.

There will be more HD stuff on existing digital TPs, the other analogue TPs will go back to SES. They have a lot to lease then.

It'll be interesting if that plan can survive when thousands will get static on their screens :D
However they plan to "up the pressure" on people come January with permanent info crawlers etc. to disturb viewing on some channels.

Cant see SES letting the channels carry on - several of them are earmarked for additional HD services which are due to start the following day :D

Thanks a million Pietclock,

So it sounds like it could all go to plan, especially if that bandwidth is already earmarked for HD services.
I'm planning to invite people to an event to watch the last few minutes of analogue satellite in Europe, it's a part of an artwork,
It'll be quite embarrassing if it turned out that they didn't in fact switch off :-comp

All sat launches are fab. Ive been watching them for over 10 years and never get bored of them.

Trying to watch them in dialup days was hopeless - I remember one launch where the booster went from 0 feet to about 500 feet in the air in 2 frames :-rofl2

If it turned out they need more time, they would announce it well ahead. Until now, the timeline stands. However there are lots of installers complaining about many people waiting too long to convert to digital (changing the LNBs/Receivers). They fear there will be a big run in April so they cant deliver parts in time etc.
Especially older people are still ignoring all the info, because they dont want to pay for the digital upgrade.
I think this will change when they put on the info banners all day ;)

Dialup? What self respecting satellite enthusiast would be seen without a Tooway connection... Me apparently.

Hmm there are 29 analogue tp's left on air. We have now accounted for 15 of them. Presumably the rest will be pulled off air when things are quiet overnight.

These are only the public TV channels. There is no info about the commercial channels yet ( RTL etc). The problem is the coordination, because there are a few different uplink stations involved. That's why they wrote "by SES Astra". Because some TPs are uplinked by SES, (SW RP, ZDF, 3sat) and the others are managed by the stations themselves.
RTL for example is uplinked by Media Broadcast in Usingen, while RTL2 is uplinked by APS in Munich... It's entirely possible that some of the commercial stations will go off air before or after the public ones.

I speak a bit German and regarding "clocks" .. A la "15:00 Uhr" - that's how time is expressed in German. Pretty much like "Kell 15:00" in Estonian.

yeah you are right I didnt see that. Uhr = clock but in this case it must be translated "o'clock".
and "Abschaltung" it simplified to "off". However that would be "aus" in German.

'21:00 Uhr Abschaltung Tp.49 (KI.KA) zum Sendeschluss'

'21:00 o'clock switch-off Tp.49 (KI.KA) at closedown' is how I would translate it. But im not google
