Are these basic switches still available in the UK ?
I have an old global one for indoor use ..which I currently have outside wrapped in a plastic bag ..but I'd like to replace this with a more modern lower loss version ..that I can leave outdoors ..
Basically I have 3 lines to Carl ..all of which are currently in use ..
Ku, Ka(band D) , Ka (band A (SL3) ...but have recently added a C band lnb ..
Thus I need 4 lines in theory ..
This isn't practical ..
So ..just before I dropped off to sleep the other night..
It came to me ..
Double up on one of the lines feeding an LNB that DOESN'T require 22Khz functionality..and thus WONT be influenced by a 22khz tone on the line.
Can't use the SL3 ..this would switch to ku circular ..
Can't use Ku ...this would band switch the unit ..and this control is needed.
Which leaves the Ka linear XMW ..
Not influenced in any way by 22KHZ ...as is the C band lnb ..
Perfik..
So I've seperated the Ka line into 2 through a continuous 22khz tone switch ..
Tone off ..the line is diverted for XMW ka use..
Tone on ..the line is repurposed for C band use ..
Tried it and it works ..
I can still lock the Azam mux Ka 7East ....by using Diseqc 1.1 (channel 6) 22khz tone off ..
with little noticeable degredation in signal level..
Switched to Cband 5 west locking CRTV on Carl ...using diseqc 1.1(channel 6) 22khz tone on
All appears working just fine ..BUT where to get a waterproof exterior use 22khz simple continuous tone swich ??
Yep they still use 'em in the States and Canada ...but not over here of course..
Typical..

Ok ..I'm sorted I think ..
Paypal to the rescue ..
Silly money to get one from the US or indeed Canada ..
Pulsat DO sell 'em ..but they wat almost £20 ..
Yeah right ..
Ordered one from China ....priced in Australian dollars $6.50 ...
But ships wordwide ..free postage ..
Works out at £3.55 ..
That'll do for me ..

Yes it will be a couple of weeks delivery ..but I can wait ..
In the meantime I'll make my old 'Global' switch a bit more weather resistant.

I'm sure I mentioned that you would need some more cables when you laid the foundations.

In hindsight CH ..you're right of course
I likely thought 3 would be sufficient at the time..
Wasn't planning a bigger dish at the time nor mounting a C band lnb on Neil ..
But more practical to do so now I have Carl.

Now for a strange tale..
Last night about 1:30 AM ..I locked albeit briefly ..ie long enough to scan into the F15.
This one found bt Llew a few days ago ..
VS, have you seen this one before on 16E?

Digital 1 (Vision 4 showing at present)

21538H SR 1054 FEC 3/4

Can't find Cam News on 21537H, maybe replaced with this? Different SR.
Attaching photo ..sorry about the quality ..I was seriously rushing.
So the point is that the 22KHZ switch was in line at the time..
Proving it takes little if anything away insertion wise.
So I checked all my other channels at 16E..
They actually seemed stronger ??
This morning of course ..No sign of the channel Digital 1 ...but ran a test to see if I imagined the signal increase ..
Here are the rather odd results >>>>
First 16 E without the switch in line
TFM 12.2db > 12.5 db (Av 12.3)
LTM 8.4db >8.9db (Av 8.6)
Equinoxe 9.7db > 10.4db (Av 10)

..and with the switch in line
TFM 12.4db > 12.6db (Av12.5)
LTM 9.1db > 9.6db (Av 9.3)
Equinoxe 10.1db > 10.7db (Av 10.4)

Make of it what you will but I see a clear advantage to having the 22KHz switch in line at 16East Ka ..
I repeated the experiment at 7E and the results were not conclusive ..
If anything the levels were the same ..not increased ..nor reduced.

It's certainly an oddity..
Perhaps the Switch is having a filter effect ? ..perhaps there is some minimal amplification ? ..but why only at 16 East and not 7 East.
Another Mystery Llew ....you know we love 'em.

The switch (if well made) will have a cut off filter at both ends of the IF band, meaning the F15 tuner is not seeing noise generated outside this by the LNBs open frequency curve.

16 East may have stuff that really needs to be filtered out for an improved signal (an extended band perhaps), or simply more transponders that partially swamp the input stage of the tuner.

I tried the relatively weak ImpacTV in lieu of Vision 1 (not transmitting 'til later) and there's no difference for me with a Global GEN22 in line. In or out, TP locks and gives me 7.1 to 7.2dB on that channel. So no pain / no gain - no insertion loss or gain.

Good to know ..like me ..you find the insertionlosses quoted of negligible impact..
As to why the improvement specifically on 16E ..that will remain a mystery and may chance when the outdoor version of the switch arrives from China.
