If anyone is interested in buying a large mesh satellite dish of size 3.0 metre or larger they are available from Ali Baba. I have listed the prices below, converted to GBP from USD, prices exclude shipping.

Factory price High quality Low price Pole Mount 3.0M Satellite Mesh Antenna 300cm, View satellite mesh antenna, Satmaximum Product Details from Hefei Yilong Electronics Technology Co., Ltd. on Alibaba.com

3.0m = £344
3.5m = £428
3.7m = £470
4.0m = £611
4.5m = £1146
5.0m = £1375
6.0m = £1528

The dishes look to be identical in design to the Orbitron range.
From reading the details provided by the supplier I think they come with a choice of Az/El mount or polar mount but that would need to be confirmed.

I've looked at these, some of the 1 off prices look very tempting but shipping?? Then I saw some of the packing used. Have a look at the pics in this listing:
https://wholesaler.alibaba.com/prod...m=a2700.wholesale.maylikever.6.1df331f0JXtPCN

One shows the petals in a sturdy metal frame but the others, just in cardboard, are exposed to damage. My Fortec suffered from damage in transit due to handling and just card packing.

That type of dish is a lot easier to handle than pro ones. It's not going to be as good for Ku but that's the price paid.

I think that for C band they could be useful and offer an opportunity to "go large" at relatively low cost. There have been several tests with promising results using the 2.4m "tin dish" for C band so hopefully these mesh big boys would follow suit?

The packaging would be a concern, however, it would be up to prospective purchasers to get some type of reassurance from the supplier as to the type of packaging used. If there were several units purchased it might help to prompt the seller to crate them up?

Orbitron (at least the larger diameters) had sixteen panels, this manufacturer mentions twelve as a maximum.

There is also no Ku band gain in the specification, so be careful in what you pay for.

Dont know, ask them.

I only put the details up to provide visibility of the dish availability should someone want one or wish to arrange a group buy.

Quote for 3.5m mesh dish from the supplier linked to in the first post of this topic.

C Band 3.5 metre mesh antenna with polar mount
Unit price: USD575
Sea Freight to London Port: USD100
The destination ports handling fees is about GBP 287

I would guess that the sea freight charge and UK port handling fee would be similar for several size dishes in their range? It calculates out at a total of approximately £803 GBP for one 3.5m mesh dish including a polar mount.

If the UK port handling fee is £287 per consignment then this cost would be spread across multiple units thereby reducing the cost per item?

Update:

I got a quote from another Chinese supplier for mesh dishes. This new quote was for two 3.7m mesh antenna units including polar mounts. The base cost is $790 USD for two or approximately £304 each. The supplier provides two packaging options, cardboard or wooden crate, the wooden crate option being the more expensive of the two.

I am waiting for a full quote from the supplier to include wooden crate packaging and freight to a UK port, probably Tilbury. If anyone wishes to have the contact details of the supplier to organise a purchase I will pass them on. I have attached a few pictures below of the packaging options.

Please note that UK import duty, taxes and a port handling fee will need to be added to the cost of any purchases. These amounts are currently unknown but could probably be found out by contacting the port. The port handling fee from the previous enquiry listed in post 14 of this topic was £287. If that was per consignment it would equate to £143.50p per dish setup on a two dish purchase.

What is the claimed reflector gain at the usual frequencies ?

If anyone wishes to create their own reflectors, I do have two or three 3m Prodelin panel segments that could be used to create a former. You would then need to make eight clones plus the back plate assembly for a single dish, but knowing those nearby have access to metalworking tools that should not be difficult.

Free to anyone that wishes to collect.

...

I have pasted below the gain figure for C band as listed on the web page from the link provided in the 1st post of this topic for a 3.0m dish. There is no gain figure provided for Ku band.

3.0m Chinese mesh dish:
C-Band Gain@ 4GHz 40.15dB

The gain figures for an Elite Antennas 3.0m dish:
39.7dB at 3.8GHz
40.5dB at 4.2GHz

If the gain figures for the Chinese mesh dish are accurate they compare favourably with an equivalent size spun aluminium dish from Elite antennas for C band. The Chinese mesh dishes seem to provide a reasonably low cost intoduction into the world of the big dish men for C band?
