I used to be able to get Ticket etc quite well (watchable) on 5 east, even though it dropped off around ten at night. After having a new motor fitted I can't get much, no audio video signal. I’m guessing that the dish hasn't been aligned as well as it was? I'm no expert and before I shell out for some big bloody ladders from Screwfix, any ideas? Will I need a meter of sorts etc?

I know its touch and go with Sirius and I was lucky to get anything, especially with a 1m dish.

You can always fine tune using an analogue receiver Pete, the Cyprus Sat signal is still there. You should be still on near peak trim at 5e, it is after all pretty close to your due South setup point.

Any other way rolf? I wouldn't know an analogue receiver if I tripped over one.

Sorry, whats the south setup point exactly? Is cyprus sat giving the strongest signal to fine tune to for 5e?

When setting up a motor in the UK, 1 West is near as possible to Due South, as this is the one you centre your arc on, it should be the strongest, so any sat within five or six degrees to either side should be equally well aligned.

If you want to borrow a cheapy tone/swinging needle meter Pete, PM me with your details and I'll post it up to you.

Try and find the free Russian channel (Moscow open world) on Sirius - I think its 12380 H 27.5 3/4

Then if the signal is clear, put a wet towel over part of the dish just until the picture breaks off, then realign the dish until the picture returns. Then cover up the dish a bit more and repeat until it is no longer accessible with any movement

Then take the towel off and hey presto

Guys,

I wonder if you can help me. I live in Ukraine and pick up Sirius (5E) satellite quite comfortably (with a 90cm dish). My friend in the UK would like to pick it up also what size dish will he need ?

I am interested in particular in getting:
'The Viasat Ticket' movie channels
'The Nordic TV3' channels
'TV Sport Romania' (I know it has to be programmed in manually)
and the 'Viasat Extra' channels to see the champions league

I can arrange for the encrpytion cards to be sent out .. but Im not sure what size dish he will need !!

Depends where in the UK your friend is Stuart. South(ish) he should manage it with a 1metre dish. But going Northwards then a 1.2metre would be best. On balance a 1.2 metre would probably be a sound investment.

I can get Sirius OK in Aberdeen with a 1.2 metre dish.

The one beam that provides the TV3 channels is really weak in SE England. When you say you can easily get Sirius in Aberdeen do you mean all channels available

Some have trouble down here with a functioning 1.8m if the weather closes in

Channel Hopper, I guess I dived in a bit there! But I did some decent research over the weekend. On Saturday (which was a fine day), I could get all the channels that Matrix Reloaded will decode plus good readings from all transponders. Yesterday which was raining, there were problems only with a couple of channels which dropped in and out.

This would tie in pretty well with the LyngSat coverage charts for the two Sirius Nordic beams which show that the North East tip of Scotland (Aberdeen area) just catches the edge of 1.2 metre coverage.

Because there are two satellites in the same position (actually 0.2 degrees apart) the difference in the South of the UK between polarities means you would have four beams to negotiate. On a dish of 1.2m you might be able to fine tune by movement of the motor to improve signal from both satellite , this is certainly the case with the 1.5m I installed last month
