My first tip would be to see if there's an option to revert to Classic View and then try to get it look as much like XP as possible!

Find the 'ancient' view to make it look like Win98 and I'll buy one.

Coming straight from XP and not having anything to do with Vista, the layout looks very much like a Linux distro. Maybe they've taken a few hints from there :-rofl2

Unlike more youthful members we have already paid MS for
3 versions of DOS
Windows 3.1
Windows 98
Windows 2000
Windows NT
Windows XP
Windows Vista

I think us old timers should get it free with a new PC from the government :p

Only three versions? I started out on 2-point-something or other on a genuine IBM PC (not an XT) with the port for a tape recorder. When we upgraded to a hard disk (a massive 10MB full height unit) we had to have the BIOS upgraded! I still have that machine under the stairs.

We then had 3.1, 3.11, 3.2, 3.3, 3.31 (Compaq DOS, a very nice small OS that supported large disks), 4.01 (hideous), 5.0, 6.21, and 6.22

Windows 3.1
I started on 2-point-something which was bundled with Aldus Pagemaker. I then installed the standalobe Windows 286. I briefly tried 3.0 and then ditched it until 3.1 came out. I never got to grips with 3.11 or Windows for Workgroups.

Windows 98
I actually started on Win95 and then OSR2 with the USB etensions. Windows 98, expecially 98SE wasa favourite of mine for a long time.

I never even tried the ugly beast called, selfishly, Windows ME.

Very little experience of NT except for installing 2000 over it!

XP, now that's the one.

Windows Vista
You must be joking. Best forgotten about. I HATE the way it tries to hide the hard disk from you. I really had to struggle to find My Computer so that I could transfer some files over the other day.

Yeugh. Yeugh. Yeugh.

Windows &. I hope it's as good as they say. I'll have to reserve judgement for the moment.

...its there...

'15. Activate XP modeIf you've old but important software that no longer runs under Windows 7, then you could try using XP Mode a virtual copy of XP that runs in a window on your Windows 7 desktop. But there's a big potential problem, as XP Mode only works with systems that have hardware virtualisation (AMD-V or Intel VT) built-in and turned on'...WOW:)

@ Paul, I must be more addled than I thought I completely forgot about Win 95.........
Was a late starter with Dos as was too busy programming the Acorn Electron in BBC basic. So I used 3.1 initially and then had Dos 5, remember very well the Dos 6 disaster when you did a CHKDSK (I think it was) and often wiped the drive :eek: So they hurried out 6.1 to hide their embarrassment.

When you think about it we have gone a long way in a very short time.....

Have we benefitted?....now there is a thread to start

Generally, hardware lasts longer than it's developers or OSes. So with each new windows, amount of non-supported (but still usable and actual) hardware increases rapidly.

So I'm not switching to 7 so far.

In generall, it looks like very idiot-proof OS, at least at 1st glance. I've installed it on one idiot's laptop, let's see how much time he'll need to ruin it.

The first question the average person will ask when getting Windows 7 is how the heck do you get rid of Live Mail and install Windows Mail or Outlook.

Amazed this was not covered in a list of 67 tips and tricks.
