HI ALL

You may have seen my post from a few weeks back when I fitted a 2.5 inch HDD to a Samsung Sky+ box to try it. Has anyone on here actually done it as a permanent modification? The only problem I'm going to have is modding the HDD cradle in some way but it seems viable.

Just asking! :D

Interesting question :)

Just stick the drive down using a couple of sticky pads.

Googling "sky+ ssd drive" gives the answer yes it works.

No real data on lifespan of the discs - there are concerns about the effect of thousands of write operations during live pause, and if the drive does fail it will almost certainly fail with little or no warning. So you could lose many hours of programmes overnight.

use a decent quality drive & go for it :)

If you have to do the mounting properly you can get 2.5" to 3.5" adapter cradles for 3-4 quid - I used one when I changed the hdd in my venerable old Dell desktop to a ssd over the last week or so.

Now that is just the kind of thing I was looking for. Thanks for the link Viperscan. Plenty to choose from on that certain auction site. :)

OK, well I have ordered one of those 3.5 to 2.5 inch converters. Now, just trying to decided on a hdd. I have seen a Hitachi 750GB (sata 3) drive which I think will do the job.

I have now ordered a HGST (Hitachi) 2.5 inch 750GB HDD for the Sky box. Looking forward to doing this. It will run more quietly and cooler as well. A good purchase made! :D

The big question is will the OS in that box support that large of a drive?

And will the HDD interface work with an SATA III I/O, I think they are backward compatible, SATA 3 to SATA 1 or 2, but i don't know what the setup is in that receiver as far as the I/O interface to the HDD.

I had problems with older laptops when replacing the drive with a larger faster one, the OS did not report the correct capacity of the hard drive.

What version SATA interface was it? 1, 2 or 3?

And if the lower ones did you have any problems with an SSD SATA 3 in that PC?

Sorry for the hijack..........................My fault.

Yes, the Samsung Sky Plus HD box will support that size drive. It's only when you get to 1TB then problems start. SATA 3 is backwards compatible with SATA 2 so I reckon it should be a breeze :)
