Hi all
Just want to have a rant about rip off britain.
I'm just sick and tired of having to pay through the nose for everything when our european neighbours pay much less.
I've just spent the last fortnight glued to eurosport (19e analogue) watching the winter olympics.
During the ads, I noticed a pattern emerging.
As usual, most of the products advertised were much cheaper than they are in the UK.
I mean come on, AOL broadband for €4.99 a month.
Dell computers from €249
Even most of their sat subscriptions make ours look like daylight robbery.
As has been said before,

"AT LEAST DICK TURPIN WORE A MASK"

Do I need to go on or have I ranted enough?????:-rofl2

The grass always looks greener........

I live in France and England now looks cheap. When I lived in northern England the ads for cheap thing were always down south.

swing and roundabouts I think

I believe we pay more in the UK for some items than they do in the USA. Especially in the field of multimedia electronics. It's not a tax issue like vehicle fuel so it must be greed. I can gauge this in some respects by shopping in Costcos in this country where I save a good deal of money.

I think it is worth the effort to look for a good price. I bought my moteck 2100 from Germany £40 delivered. One thing I notice about non british channels is the lack of commercial breaks it seems to be all adverts over here.

Spain is cheaper for some things and not others. For example, a gammon steak costs about €5, whereas a loaf of bread is 30cts. 20p for a loaf!

Saw another good one on DSF whilst watching the darts this morning.

"Premiere satellite 12 month subscription, €69 including receiver"

Don't know what channels it includes, but at that price who cares???:p

And then there is the phone connection. I am charged €20 for having a phone, €20 for DSL2000, and €10 for no limits use. Is that still cheap? VAT is 16%

You can't even make your own for that price, LOL. I did see a German commercial for Dell and the PC was 0€!

Here in Germany, Premiere (now without the footie) are in some serious crap and falling-over-backwards to drive up their subscription base: to watch what, I have no idea?

The companies that operate out of Jersey and save on the VAT - HMV, Amazon, Tesco etc. are coming under pressure to move out.

Some have been served with a years notice to quit, others considered moving to Guernsey but they are closing the door as well.

Looks like CDs, DVDs and games are going to get more expensive!

Thanks for filling me in with the whole picture.
Things don't look quite as rosy when you're looking at the bigger picture.
Oh well, at least your VAT is only 16%, not much comfort I know but ours is 17.5%

The daily rant forum sounds like a god idea though.
(No then, what else can I think of to complain about??)

:-rofl2

I should have added that German Sales Tax, under Angela Merkel, is going to rise. I have forgotten the amount, but, I believe it is way above 17.5%.

So not so bad for you afterall.

mark.
