Hi all,

I have been using a Satellite receiver for the past year and now the
bug to buy a linux based receiver seems to have bitten me !

Having had a look around and the support available, I am thinking
of buying a DreamBox.

Price for the models available from the local authorised
dealer (the only one) quoted to me are as follows
without HDD (inclusive of local taxes) :

DM 7025 S --- GBP 420
DM 7020 S --- GBP 360
DM 500 S --- GBP 190

I am in North Africa and buying it over the internet from Europe
or elsewhere and having it shipped to my location is fraught with
risks especially since customs procedures etc are cumbersome.

My requirements are - to be able to Cardshare (as client!),
auto update software/firmware/keys. I have a home LAN
with a router and a good internet connection over ADSL and
au fait with Linux.

Would you please advise me on the following :

1. Is DreamBox a good choice?

2. Are the prices quoted reasonable?

3. What Model should I choose?

4. Things to keep in mind when buying and installing.

cheers :-beer

Hello,

1. YES!
2. If you were in Europe- no, but as you are in N. Africa- dunno.
3. They all do the same basic thing. DB500s is the smallest but can record to your PC hard drive (others have HD).
4. Learning curve! Read and re-read the Idiot's Guide several times.

Go on- join the dark side! ;)

7025 is so new that U won´t find to many program for it (They are coming but it will take some time before they are de-bugged:) )

So I would go for a 7020, rather good machine (I have one myself)

Or get a second-hand 7000 from fleabay and save yourself a bit of cash. If you decide it's not for you, you can easily sell it again for what you paid, and if you do like it then maybe you can then think about getting a 7025 or whatever (should be some more images by then)

Sorry just realised you are in North Africa and fleabay might not be convenient for you

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice and valuable comments.

I struck a deal for a 7025 which is being delivered to me later this
evening.

I need to run the cable yet for network & make a null modem cable
before I fire up the box...
Give me a couple of days and I shall post first impressions on the
7025 forum....

Though indicated in the specs, the RJ-11 jack is missing...
