AISmon.jpg ..So ...last night I has a go at Ship plotting with Airspy ..
I got it working ...but have seen no ships as yet using opencpn ...AISmon ...
Not surprising as I'm thinking my Airband / FM dipole isn't adequate ..
Over the weekend I'll try and find some plans for a 162mhz collinear ...
Not expecting miracles as the detection radius maxes out at around 40miles ...and I'm a bit land locked ..
We shall see ..
Certainly I aint paying again at COAA for shipplotter ..at this point ..
lol

Starting a new thread for Ship plotting ..
Maybe if you get a chance AS ..you could move any relevant threads or references to this thread ..
as there are only a couple at this point ..
cheers

Most of the VHF traffic in the marine band is limited to 1 watt or 25 watts in port depending on the channel, and you have several channels to work with.

My house boat is only 10.2 air miles from me, but due to the terrain I can't get a good enough signal to establish reliable communication, (ship to ship channels) even at 25 watts on both stations.

Now once I'm down at the marina the hand held at 5 watts has no problems in contacting the boat at 4 miles.

You would need a very high gain VHF dipole, or a good yagi to pick up anything beyond 10 to 15 miles.

Shakespeare makes a good line of VHF marine band antennas that cover the 156 to 162 MHz band quite well.

Now most long range communications for ship traffic is in the HF and MF bands and is mostly single side band, these bands are in the 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 18 and 22 MHz range.

Air miles, a direct measurement, or as the Crow fly's, ground measurements would be 22.4 miles as the snake slithers, or by road.

I wish the thing would fly, it would be a bit better to load it up with grocery's and other stuff if I could land it in the store parking lot.

A 4 mile trip by boat to get more drink ice is a bit of a job, launch the boat, moor the boat, get ice, launch the boat, moor the boat, drink.

Not far ...and probably a base station on the canal is the only thing I am currently receiving ..

Can "vrs" plot both the aircraft and boats onto one map?
I think this was asked once before ..and the answer is ...I simply dont know ..

If the ship software is passing similar info to the plane software I dont see why not. You can certainly merge more than one plane receiver into VRS.

The 64million $$ question is simply does ship plotter pass the correct form of data?

You might look into one of these antennas, it covers 25 to 3000 MHz.

What sort of range are the ships?

What programs would I need?

I am tempted to have a go......

I doubt I will see anything, but just so I could have a try I ordered an aerial, and it’s arrived M:W

Now need to put the thing up somewhere.
