A few of you will have signed up to the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (we appear to have very little here) and loaded a small programme onto your PC. When activated this allows the team from the US to harness the power of the processor when you are not using it, to look at the noise from space, in an attempt to discover if any of it is from a living/breathing/sentient being from another part of the universe.

Where does this raw data come in from ?

Take a look at this mans back garden

http://www.setileague.org/vsa/qst_0209.pdf

and some history behind the whole process

The page with most of the statistics for this part of the world

The answer would be yes, but most are simply donating PC down time to the search, not putting up receiving systems.

I used to be "de-facto" in charge of a bunch of machines at work, which did very little, if anything, for most of the day. So I put them to work on the seti@home project running a screen saver which processed seti data. It was strictly a computer thing -- didn't get to do anything with my own dish, tho. ;)

That was years ago, but it turns out they're still around and going strong.

The UK is actually number 3 on the list of "contributors" with 363557 users.

Anyone here seen the film - The Arrival ?

Released the same month as Independence Day, so it didnt do so well in the box offices of US/UK, bit I think it gave a better insight to the way we might be visited at some point

Oh and theres some satellite dishes I could cheerfully spent a few days on in the story
