Hi
A plea for advice - I have a 1.5m Gibertini, MTI lnb, pani 30 and pace 2200 digiboxes and am trying to get 2d. Took 10 minutes to get 2a and b tuned in -a week of frustrating twitchin and not a sniff of 2d. Neither box provides any feedback on 2d transponder strengths. My next move is to get a Nokia 9800 S and try and get some/any kind of reliable feedback on transponder strength. Any help guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at the reports at http://www.astra2d.com/germany.htm there are only reports for 1.2m and 1.8m. One report suggests that 1.5m may work but it's also possible that if your setup is less than optimum it may be too small.

Is there anyone else near you that you know has a 1.5m dish working for 2D?

Hi

I think you may well be right on the edge (or even not quite there) with dish size. Check out _http://www.astra2d.com/germany.htm to see.

Have you checked with anyone else that this setup will do it - at least with regards astra 2d? If 1.5m is enough then first up check your LNB has the correct skew on it, this is absolutely crucial with astra 2d! This should be about 11 degrees in your location. A common mistake is to set the LNB skew a top dead center as this 'looks right' but it couldn't be more wrong! You may still be able to get the other stuff with it set like this. You can check the signal strength useing your digibox (Pani 30 is best) - press services-4-0-1-select and selct manual tuning. Make settings for a 2D transponder such as 10714, 22.0, H, 5/6 (that one is ITV Anglia - others may work better in Berlin) I suggest local knowledge will be key for the strongest channels! Anyway once you key in settings, select find channels and press select ONCE. This will give you the signal for that particular transponder. If you are getting partial lock then you can start setting up from there.

Hope thats enough to get you started.

Cheers

Nick

Thanks. A local sat company installs 1.8m to get astra 2d east of berlin and they say 1.50m should do it at my location but it has to be just right. Have tried/am trying the manual tuning on the pani 30 - are the vertial transponders supposed to be strongest on 2d in fringe areas?

Just a quick question Mike, are you using the Gilbertini feedhorn and C120 LNB?

May be worth your while obtaining the dedicated feedhorn and a C120 LNB as they should perform better than the integrated feed LNB, the Invacom quad is favoured by many of the fringe reception members.

Thanks Rolf - so the shopping list should be
Universal Invacom quad-output LNB 0.3dB with C120 flange - unlike th quatro this does not need a multi switch?
C120 feedhorn - so I need a special adapter to let the Invacom slot into the 40mm holder on my dish?
The c120 is better than the 40mm neck beacuse it is fixed at the best reception point (if I get the right feedhorn) ?
Cheers

Yes, the feedhorn should give you better dish illumination, whether the Gilbertini one, or one of the invacom adjustable ones, you can slide them in and out of the holder to find the sweet spot. Yes, a quad gives you four independent universal feeds. :)

You could still try to optimise the present setup, perhaps by pulling the LNB out to its furthest point and setting the skew whilst watching the signal strength and quality, then trying it slightly closer and watching the affect.

Rolf's advice is the right way to go. If you buy the ChannelMaster feedhorn, it comes with two semicircular adapter rings to enable the use of a thin neck feedhorn. It should be set right back in the holder, as far as the clamp wil allow.
You have to tighten the clamp really tight as the Invacom LNB is large and heavy, and tends to rotate backwards.
I tried both makes of feedhorn on the this dish, Gibertini and ChannelMaster, and the latter worked better.
I'd give up on the Pace 2200, it is poor for fringe reception.
Many Panasonic 30s are coming to the end of their lives. Mine started to die last week, they usually start to lose channels in high band first. It will also drive you nuts with regular crashes on weak signals. The frequent forced re-starts by cutting the mains supply will also shorten the box's life.

They are really trade suppliers but may sell individual items if you talk to them nicely.
Alternatively, try the Satellite Superstore:

where you will pay a bit more.

Have played with the setup using a nokia 9200 for the last week - much better feedback on signal strength and quality - not been successful in tweaking it to get any 2d channels. Before I buy a new lnb and try again I have some questions regarding the Invacom LNB - I have a 1.5m ofset dish can I use the c120 lnb (INVACOM QUAD C 120 LNB QDF-031 0.3dB??) with feedhorn? If yes - Is there an idiot guide available anywhere to help set this up? If no is the universal invacom lnb (INVACOM QUAD LNB QDH-031 0.3d:cool: the best buy?
As always thanks and gratitude in advance of any help/information
Mike

Do not buy the universal version QDH-031- it is nothing like as good. The QDF-031 will work well.
There is an idiot's guide available- from this forum! Just ask a question.
I owned one of these Gibertini dishes with exactly this Lnb and feed before I sold it someone. If I get a chance I'll take a photo of the way it is mounted to help you get it set up. It's really not difficult to fit once you grasp the basic principles, and, crucially, have access to a meter or a portable TV next to the dish.
