That's an impressive firework. Let's hope it's not the start of a trend for SpaceX.

Seems like something explodes at the top of the rocket rather than at the bottom where the boosters are.

Ive just done a slo-mo of the detonation. I would say the top stage fires first leading to the big explosion. That looks like some sort of electrical short circuit to me firing the top stage.

EUTELSAT STATEMENT ON LOSS OF SPACECOM’S AMOS-6 SATELLITE

Paris, 1 September 2016 - Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL) regrets the loss of Spacecom’s AMOS-6 satellite following the launch pad explosion today of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in Cape Canaveral. In collaboration with Facebook, Eutelsat had contracted a multi-year agreement to lease the satellite’s Ka-band payload covering Sub-Saharan Africa, with a view to launching broadband services from early 2017.

Eutelsat remains committed to growing broadband in Africa and will explore other options to serve the needs of key clients ahead of the launch of its own full-High Throughput African broadband satellite, due in 2019.

The impact on revenues is estimated at around €5 million in FY 2016-17, €15 million in FY 2017-18 and €25-30 million in FY 2018-19. Attendant savings in operating costs will partially mitigate the impact on the EBITDA margin. All financial objectives published on 29 July 2016 are confirmed.

So coming up to the end of its life. Wonder if any satellite will be put there in the interim while a replacement is being built.

Eutelsat Communications regrets the loss of the satellite Amos 6 Spacecom after today's explosion on the launch pad Falcon 9 SpaceX rocket at Cape Canaveral . Eutelsat in collaboration with Facebook , has signed a long-term lease agreement for capacity Ka-band of the satellite , including sub-Saharan Africa , to launch Internet service at the beginning of 2017 years .

Eutelsat continues to seek to increase the availability of the Internet in Africa and examine other options to meet the needs of key customers even before you take your own high-capacity satellites for Africa in 2019 years .

The impact on revenue is estimated at about 5 million euros in the financial year 2016-17 , 15 million euro in the financial year 2017-18 and 25-30 million in the financial year 2018-19 . Accompanying savings in operating costs partially compensate the impact on the EBITDA margin . All financial targets published on 29 July 2016 were confirmed.

The big question now is how long will it take for Amos 6 replacement to be built and launched.
In an interview with a top official, he estimated that efforts will be made to shorten it to less than two years.
I hope that the four Israeli national FTA channels on Amos will not be stopped in order to preserve power.
I feel sorry for the African people who could have satellite internet through Facebook, and hopefully they will find a way to provide it to them from another platform.

At least a few years. No doubt Eutelsat will put something temporary there in case they need to replace Amos-2 but it obviously won't fulfill the original mission.

Spacecom-Xinwei talks collapse

After it was seemingly all but done, the deal to sell the Spacecom satellite platform to Chinese investors has collapsed without conclusion.
