analogue problem

I have recently had a 60cm dish installed to astra19e and plugged in to a pace mss300 receiver.
I get lots of channels (mostly german which is what i want) but the picture quality of all channels is rather snowy. The engineer who installed the dish and tuned in the receiver said that the problem could be due to too many factors and therefore he can not improve the picture. I had little faith in him because he only looked about 9 years old.
Does anyone know what this might be be due to? the dish/ the receiver / the cabling or the alignment. is there anything i should try ? or is it just hard luck due to the area i live in ?

Secondly does anyone know where i can download a manual for the pace mss300. I am trying to work out how to programme the receiver to get all good channels in a row rather than have to scroll through lots of empty channels.

thanks

It could be any off the reasons mentioned.

Firstly, where do you live?

Does the dish have a clear view?

More questions..

Is the cable new?

Does the picture get worse in bad weather?

Did the engineer use any kind of meter when he set it up?

Don't worry we should have it pinned down soon.

You can get more info on the receiver here..

Pace MSS menus are all about the same. Press the menu button on the rcu, and the options that come up are fairly self explanatory.

I gurantee this web site will help you set your channel order up to your satisfaction:

http://www.analoguesat.co.uk/ (Hmm wonder who runs that ? ;))

Snowy pictures (sparklies) are due to weak signal, This can be due to

trees in the way, dish not aligned correctly, water in the cable etc.

Thanks for your help+replies so far.
The cable is new and the installer said he used a meter to find the right angle. It was only put in yesterday so i haven't experienced it in bad weather yet. It also hasn't rained so far so the cable can not be wet.

If you can SAFELY get to the dish, theres an easy way to check the alignment. Tune into one of the worst channels, have someone watching it, and gently move the lnb left and right then up and down. If the signal improves then the dish isnt aligned properly.

Let's face it, whoever installed your dish is a twerp.

You said he looked "about 9 years old", if he charged you more than a day's supply of sherbert lemons, you've been had.

As analougesat says adjust the lnb slightley. Also if he was nine there might be too much signal and flooding the tuner. but were there is a problem there is always a solution

Has the offset for the LNB been set or is it internal within the LNB?

By snowy picture, do you mean sparklies, or do you mean snowy as in a bad terrestrial picture?

If it is sparklies, have you tried retuning any of the channels, as it could just be that the frequenciy is slightly offset from the one the receiver was originally tuned to.

PS. The age of the installer bears little relation to his ability to setup a dish, I've seen some mature installers perform some pretty awful setups and come out with similar crap to excuse their bad workmanship. :)

Thanks for your help everyone.
I am not sure about Jimbo's comment whether the offset for the LNB been set or is it internal. Afraid i don't understand that.
Thankyou for the screenshot analguesat, yes this means what i have is definately "sparkles". The installation people now say that they are going to send their meter off for testing. !!! What would be best is if they come around and wobble the lnb a bit. I can't do it because its way up high on my roof.
thanks all.

I know what you mean its like you are watching it on rf when ur on a scart and got no sparkles. Its something to do with using a faultly lnb then the reciever is permently damaged. Its Internal.

In an offset (egg-shaped) dish, depending on the type of LNB, the LNB may need to be rotated a number of degrees from it's 'upright' position in the holder in order to maximise polarity. In other types this angle (for want of a better description) is built into the LNB so it should remain 'upright', as in Sky LNBs for example.
