The conductor and composer André Previn has died at the age of 89.
His manager told the BBC he died at his home in New York on Thursday morning.
Previn is best known for ditching a lucrative career in Hollywood to pursue his love of classical music as a jazz pianist.
André Previn dies at the age of 89

RIP André

BBC Radio seem to remember him by little more than the famous Morecambe and Wise sketch, yet he was prolific worldwide and renowned for fusing Jazz and Classical.

The M+W sketches that got Andre another string to his bow, playing second fiddle to - an imaginary - Yehudi Menhuin

His jazz discography must span some forty years.

RIP.

Very sad. Some of my earliest jazz record purchases were by him or included him as the pianist.

R.I.P André.

Well we all know why the BBC take that stance, he was a Jew, when in reality he was also a masterful musician pianist and composer, who along with his parents fled Germany in 1938. But of course relying on the BBC to let you know any of that 'background information' is unheard of these days, R.I.P. Andre

I found the BBC TV reporting of his passing to be very inclusive and respectful. They gave first importance to his childhood escaping from persecution and then his music. They noted his first music score written for a Lassie film at age 19 and then others. The showed him playing jazz on a piano and then conducting various orchestras. Only at the end did they mention the famous M&W sketch which, let us not forget, he was very pleased to have done.

Plenty of background information there for those who care to listen.

This exact point is about to be "debated" on today's Jeremy Vine Radio 2 prog. from 12.00, apparently.

It's not a programme I listen to so it would be good if you could summarise when it's finished please.

I fail to see any connection with his background and the perceived lack of publicity given, one of the posts I made in the music thread yesterday has an hour long programme of Mr Preview, complete with BBCFour logo, somebody at the corporation must have greenlit it

Well I stand corrected, but that then begs the question as to why the radio announcement mentioned in post#2?. I still do not like the bias they demonstrate on a daily basis when it comes to anything the corporation does not agree with. Rather than conforming to their royal charter and showing even handedness and unbiased reporting they visciously attack what they do not agree with. They used to show respect to all cultures and credes and be respected worldwide for it, but not now.

The only time I recall Previn having less than a glowing report was when one BBC article pigeonholed him as 'a conductor'.

It was a few years back though, his obituary goes into more detail than I believe necessary about his relationships, almost alluding to him being a serial womaniser, I did not know about the Woody Allen link before now, but it would concur with his earlier opinion on Hollywood.
