Been given a 'dead' angle grinder, generic design with 10 inch disc.

I get continuity through the circuit, from plug up to switch and beyond, and from motor windings, through the brushes, back down.

It all stops at an unmarked lump with three wires. I assume it is a slow start device, delivering power progressively in relation to the disc momentum.

Its about an inch square and sits in the handle of the grinder.

Any idea what it is called and how to get a replacment ?

Is it a contact relay? There is a similar box in my coffee grinder described as

MAZ_40 - Mazzer Grinder 110V Voltage Contactor
Fits all Mazzer Super Jolly and Major Grinders, and allows use of lower amperage power switches. $70.84 View Details

and looks like this

Nah, this is a solid state thingy, all wires to it are sealed in the resin.

Where do the wires come from/go to CH ?
Might give a clue.

Now I have taken the handle completely apart, it has markings.

XS-12/D3

which is a soft start device

Diagram embossed on heatsink is like this

Connections

Live from switch (red)

output to motor windings (blue)

third wire to switch (double pole) neutral (black)

Motor has direct path back to switch neutral , and there is a 0.33uF capacitor across the switch terminals

Where to get another one ?

My first instinct would be to phone round local tool hire shops and see what they do. Might even have a 'dead pile' you could raid for a beer ??

it's the bridge, should have a DC regulater in there, have a look to see if any components are burnt, and check very carefully to see if the triac leads or heatsink are connected, most likely cause of failure

Unfortunately the post is over a year and a half old.

I'm sure that even Channel Hopper will have given up and thrown it away by now if he didn't find the answer.

I never throw things away.

It was a soft start device and had no luck with the supplier, so I bypassed it.

I do have to hold on slightly more securely when starting it, but apart from that, no other real issues.
