@ Rolfw....Yes I know it was only a quick search on Google but the bird is very similar to the one found in the British isles......the markings and colours like your first photo Rolfw!....I also have Sparrow Hawks near where I live which make a distinctive noise (described in the link) and are much smaller than pigeons!... you must also take into account that birds of prey will normally make a kill on regular prey that they can fly away with as they take it to their nest when they have young or onto a high place. So if this was a Sparrow Hawk I feel it was either very hungry or over ambitious.

It did leave it behind. Really only ate a small amount. I have left it where it is incase it decides to come back tommorow. My 2 year son thinks it's great.
"Birdie Birdie".

@ Wavey, couldn't catch the female for long enough to photograph it, but it is bigger and only black and white and speckled on the chest, very impressive birds though, even if they do dine on my little hand reared buddies. :)

@ Rolfw yes m8 nice looking birds.....at the local playing fields where I walk my dog there is always one hopping around on a piece of tarmac what used to be a playground...I can normally get quite close to it before it fly's a few yards away from me....Last summer there was pair of S.Hks that made our close thier hunting ground, every night when I returned home from work I could hear these two getting exited before they made a kill. Hense the poor house Sparrow population rapidly dropped, although the population of the bloody Starlings increased! All we had round here last summer was Crows , Magpies, Starlings and a pair of S.Hks the frigging noise was something like out of the horror film!

Best wear wet suit and wellies as well, just to be on the safe side!! LOL Can you imagine what the neighbours would think. :)

Do they generally hang around the same area? It flew off to a tree no far away.

Strangely enough, I'm off up to Stratford on Avon for a morning of Hawk flying and information Tuesday week, a Christmas present from my sister. Think it will be an interesting morning. :)

@ Rolfw....yes m8 falconry is an interesting subject to get involved in....I've heard that that the Stratford event is worth going to...many species there too. What amazes me about these birds is that when the bird is released it always comes back!

Don't need to Kleefarr, just looked through 15 pages of European hawks and it is the only one which matches. :)

But on another subject, although indirectly related. I have my own little familly site, with a photopost forum (see www.photopost.com for the type of thing) and was wondering whether we had enough members with varying interests and cameras to install one to run alongside this forum.

It can host vids, the link will tell you exactly what formats it copes with. Don't host vids on mine as they are a little memory intensive. :)

Ok I'll have a look.

15 mins ago I happened to look out the lounge window and IT WAS BACK. It didn't have anything and quickly disappeared to the other side of the car when my son jumped up to the window. I saw it go to a bush then up to the roof. I thought it had gone. Went into the back garden for a cigarette and scared it. It was on the bins with another pigeon. I ran up stairs to get the cam as I was just doing the video, but when I got back it had gone.

I have done the vid, but it's 370mb long only 18.18 minutes of it. Will work on reducing the size before posting, otherwise it'll take ages to download.

Any suggestions?
