A mate just called asking what to do about it. Apparently it locks the screen and shows a page that looks as if it originated from the Police and which says the PC has accessed websites with pornographic content and demands a payment of a fine of £100. I've found some instructions on removal on 2-viruses.com which I'll try for him tomorrow. Just wondered if anyone had encountered this?

Ah another nasty ransomware virus. If its too far advanced it may be easier just to format the drive and start again from scratch.

Tell your mate to leave it switched off until you are ready to try and clean it - it spawns extra malware if its left running!

Another reason to ditch Windows, I'm afraid.

"False Hard Drive" family of viruses was the final nail in my Micros*ft coffin.

Cannot say I have ever heard of it, but that is not surprising in view of the number out there, it is sad that people are being attacked in this way, extortion in on a grand scale, very sad

If your mate can get into safe mode he could try going into 'system restore' to an earlier time, before the attack, then run whatever antivirus he has, followed by a shredder on the free space.

About the only way to be sure though (without formatting/starting again) is to slave the drive in another PC, with a full and current AV / Spyware package and go through the whole drive with it.

Something decent though, not one of those 'off the shelf shiney cartons that once installed take over your machine and demand you open the wallet about ten months in.

If your 'mate' has a laptop then you have my sympathy.

I read an interesting article about how Mac users think that they are invulnerable to virus infection and how wrong they are, as Linux catches on, it'll go the same way.
