My Satellite Setup
Sky Plus, 4.2m dish
My Location
Alagadi, North Cyprus
Hi Everyone,

I live in Alagadi, North Cyprus.

A local Television retailer recently supplied/fitted a 4.2M dish.

We brought our Sky plus box from the uk (not sure of the make of the box - its the one sky supplies) and are paying our monthly subscription to sky.

After the installation, all was well until early evening, when BBC & ITV wouldn't work ("no satelite signal is being received" was shown on the screen). Channel 4 wouldn't work either.

The retailer came out a few days later and jiggled with the dish and it reduced the time BBC and ITV were off to uk time 7.30pm to 8.45pm and told me that was as good as it gets over here.

When i bought the dish, i wanted a quad LNB as my neighbour will want to tap into it, but they didn't have one available.

So last week they fitted an Invacom quad LNB and connected the second cable for the sky plus to work, but since then the time BBC/ITV are off has increased to uk time 5pm to 8.15 pm.

The retailer, reccons its the box not the dish and we'll have to live with it.

To add insult to injury we were at a local pub last night and got nattering to a couple who live near us and also have a 4.2M dish and they get BBC/ITV 24/7.

Would buying a HD box help ? - i have heard these boxes have better quality tuners ?

While i remember - i noticed their engineer had drilled a hole in the centre of the dish (about 1/4" in dia) so he could "look at the LNB". Would this be a cause of the problem ?

'er in doors isn't happy as the main reason for having the large dish, was so she could watch Eastenders and Coronation St - As it is now, we cannot watch either !!

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

I promise you that buying a HD box will NOT help. They have good tuners, but they have a fault which means that they keep "failing" recordings yet to happen. Check the thread "Which Sky + for fringe areas?".

The best Sky+ box for fringe areas is the Pace 3100, but even this isn't as good as the standard Pace 2600C1.

The hole in the centre of the dish is unlikely to be the cause of the problem - my Famaval 3,1m comes with it pre-drilled anyway; it is used to make sure the LNB is properly lined up with the dish.

There are several subscribers to this group who live in Cyprus and who can give you specialist local advice; hopefully one of them will read this and comment.

If you can, have a close look at the new LNB that has been fitted and let us know what model it is, also lift up the Sky+ box and see which model it is, should be on a white label underneath.
You'll probably need the attentions of one of the Cyprus members here.

The expert up North is called Iceman,he has posted many times on this subject.
Tell us the make of your sky+ box,if its not on the front or back or underneath, press services then 4 then 5 and it will tell you on your screen.
Ps I heard that the Thomson is not very good for BBC/ITV in Cyprus.

I am afraid you are one of the increasing number of victims who has recently had 4.2m dishes installed by non qualified installers.
The reason you are experiencing problems is because your dish is not constructed as it should have been..
The 4.2m dish has absolutely no problems on BBC/ITV 24/7 if installed properly.
Unfortunately the only solution to your problem is to disassemble the dish and install it correctly....good luck.

Iceman,

Can i thank you for your comment.......

I printed a copy off and took it to the shop where i purched the satelite dish from......

They assured me that they had correctly assembled the dish, and that they would return and "fettle" it and get me the best possible signal.

Following day, they came, they saw, they fettled.

anyway, we are now getting BBC/ITV 24/7 with a perfect picture...

Thanks again...

Well not a word I'd use to aligning a dish, unless you were trimming off the edges etc, but I guess it worked. :)

Fettling to me involves an angle grinder and a hammer!

So your dish is still in fine fettle.
From Googlesearch....
Fettle is from Middle English fetlen, "to set in order," originally "to gird up," from Old English fetel, "a girdle."
