Arion Af-1700e

OK, I just completed the first steps with mixed results.

I attepted to download my channel settings using Ariter18 but it failed with "Invalid Data structure, Check Target Model (FR). Well, I guess the application is not for the AF-1700E.

I then tried Ariter2 and this time I managed to download the settings OK.


Second Step was to convert the header of the boot file I downloaded yesterday.

Followed all the instructions:

Connected PC and STB with a nullmodem cable....

The convertion was done OK and this is the result:

The downloaded file was:
Type: OZK
VER: ARS1
MODEL: S170E

After the conversion with "Detect" and correction = boot.

Type: DTM
VER: ARS1
MODEL: S170EC

Now, the info I had for the model was: $SPHA333SS170EC which confirms the above results, I think????

Next step was to back up my Boot version so..

Clicked on Blue arrow
correction boot
control remote 14802
press start
but program stopped responding after a few minutes! I'm worried about this - it this happens when I'm uploading I could end up with a damaged STB :-(

do not touch any boot (buc. file)
i think you mixt all together
convert the firmware to get your version,as i see you dont have af-1700e but af-1700ec
thats mean you need differt files especialy the boot(buc.)file.you could dammaged the receiver

I don't think I mixed all files. I understand about the .auc and .buc files.

A couple of things were decided a few posts back:

1.- Since the boot was 11.1 it was needed to first upgrade to 16.1 and you kindly gave me the link to download the file TERMAL S170E_OZK_A5272.BUC

2.- You weren't quite sure the model was 1700E or 1700EC, so you sugested I converted the header of the file TERMAL S170E_OZK_A5272.BUC but instead of using convert to "1700" I was to use convert to "detect". Also the correction would be = boot.

That is exactly what I did.

Now, my question is: since we now know that the model is AF-1700EC, should I be using the file TERMAL S170EC_$OZK_A5373_20050503_BUCPCnc.buc instead of TERMAL S170E_$OZK_A5272_20050429_BUCPCn.buc ?

My second question is: If the file to be used is indeed TERMAL S170EC_$OZK_A5373_20050503_BUCPCnc.buc , should I then
a) convert the header with "convert" = "detect",
"convert" = "1700" or
c) no header conversion is required?


I think I should try again to backup the firmware, don't you think?

convertion is always requird because you have $DTM version and not $OZK version
chose option a)
the problem is not the firmware even you dont backup if the firmware is not working you can chose another one
but the problem is the bootfile if we dont have the right bootfile you destroy the receiver

Well, I understand your concern.

Plan of action:

Download a new boot file but this time I download TERMAL S170EC_$OZK_A5373_20050503_BUCPCnc.buc to march the model AF-1700EC

With Hex converter program I convert the above boot file with "convert" = "detect" and correction = boot

upload converted file with Arioner 0.24 and pray to god that I didn't damage the boot area.

Saved new converted file.

Tamazgha2003 would you agree with me that this boot file should work?

Second attempt to backup some original software:

Downloaded from the STB the "SOFT" Software I think! and saved it in a file:
ORIGINAL_DTM_ARS1_S170EC_AUC_MAR_09_2004.auc

TYPE àVER à MODEL à FILE TYPE à S/W BUILD DATE


So far so good.

Downloaded the boot file from the STB and saved it in a file:

ORIGINAL_DTM_ARS1_S170EC_BUC_VER_011_1.buc

TYPE à VER à MODEL à FILE TYPE à KNOWN VERSION


The original file and the converted file look identical when viewed through AUC_HEditv094, which I think is a good sign!

Next step is to load the converted boot file using Arioner0.24. I'll wait until you inspect my progress and comment on it.

I read the following statement with regards to boot upgrading:

If this is true - backing up my current boot loader file is a waist of time! Can you please comment on that?


I cannot find anything from the boot file I downloaded S170EC_$OZK_A5373_20050503_BUCPCnc.buc that says it's version 16.1. How do you know this file is version 16.1?

So many questions and suggestion will make of this thread an excellent case study of how to upgrade a 1700EC

What can I say? I never in a million years would have guessed that that file can be converted for the Arion 1700ec! tamagha2003, I'm impressed

Downloaded the file and tomorrow will do the convertion.

I think I'll go for it tomorrow. My bigest fear is to see the famoust 88:88 after the upgrade!!! - pray that it goes well !!!

I have read more than one set of instructions on how to use ARIOER 0.24

One thing that I'm NOT too sure as some intructions confict with each other.

Should I start with the receiver with POWER OFF OR IN STANDBY. I notice that people treat these two states to be the same and it is confusing me.

So, should the receiver be unplugged from the mains to begin the process of uploading the firmware / software to the receiver or should the receiver be on standby?

Hi and thanks for clarifying that point for me.

Today is the day! I decided that I'll load boot loader V 16.1 first, that leaves me another opportunity to upgrade to 17.1 if anything went wrong!

By the way, regarding the statement "never load the same or older boot loader version...." had me unsure about what version I was thinking in loading up. The Header convertion program doesn't tell you the vertion No so I used Notepad to open up the file bootloader.buc and search for the string "S170EC", the second entry of this string is right next to the version No. As it happened, the version I was thinking about loading up was 17.1

This doesn't mean the file is a good one but at least you have an idea of what version you are dealing with.

Can you please confirm the steps I have in mind:

1- Upload boot loader to version 16.1
2- Upload software to the highest version 16.1 can handle.
3- Enable EMU
4- Do an automatic channel scan to see if I get anymore channels.

I'm not sure about the last step as I have never done it. My STB already had the channels stored when I got it - My friend did that for me.

Well, I've done it!!!!


First to V 16.1 and then highest V compatible with 16.1 :-rub

Checked everything and once I was happy with it I moved on to Boot Loader 17.1 and latest software.

So far so good, except that arter2 doesn't seem to work. I wanted a quick way to remove hundred of channels that I cannot view. I thought about downloading thee list of channels to my laptop and doing the channel removing from there.

The multivision channels I was looking forward to view don't even appear in the list of channels.


tamazgha2003, I don't know where you are located but I wish you lived near by cause I sure like to buy you a drink without your help I would not been able to upgrade my receiver.

Thanks for the link. I downloaded the program and tomorrow will try it out.

I did a full scan and there were some 1146 channels! most of them are blocked though. All the multivision channels are blocked too so no luck there. My friend said that I need to find the codes for them, but were can you find such things!!!!

I'm surpriced with the number of channels available. There were quite a few channels that asked for a code / pin number. I entered 0000 but no luck - I supposed that is what I need the codes for!!!

I really need to read up om satellites - transponders - channels.

I hope I can use the program to sort the channels in the order that I want, delete the channels that I don't wish to view and lock others not suitable for children.

Do you own one of these receiver yourself?

While writing up a summary of steps in upgrading An Arion AF-1700EC receiver for my friend, I noticed somehing that I found interesting:

My receiver was a DTM machine originally. I downloaded an OZK boot loader file. After I converted the header of this file, the header was DTM as was my original boot loader header. I that point I thought that after uploading the converted file, my receiver would still be a DTM machine. The fact is that from that moment onwards my machine became an OZK machien

Although I have upgraded the boot loader twice and the firmware twice and I got away with it, I still feel that the process is dangerous enough to ruin the receiver because of fake or wrongly named softwarre files available for download on the Internet. I examined carefully all the files I used with notepad. There were a few that I wasn't too sure about, references of diferent model and boot version and yet listed for my AF-1700EC. Perhaps they were OK but I wasn't going to take a chance with them

By the way, I got all the multivision channels working and also all TPS channels.
I know that sooner rather than later these channels are going to be blocked so surely I don't need to look for the latest firmware version for my AF-1700EC, do I? Can I use Downloader 2.8 to keep ahead of the game?
