E-mail sent to Mr Dyke BBC big Boss

Dear Mr Dyke

Communication from the Commission to the Council, the European Parliament, the Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions on certain legal aspects relating to cinematographic and other audiovisual works/* COM/2001/0534 final */

Official Journal C 043 , 16/02/2002 P. 0006 - 0017

This is the bill there is about copyright from the EEU. I read the amount of money that SKY was asking for remaining on the sky EPG, but you certainly you did not think for a minute for all expat who live around Europe and want to remain in touch with Britain, I known you might say is due to the copyright, but if we all pay the licence in UK and pay the SKY subscription by direct debit, ( like me and my wife) officially BBC & SKY they do not infringe the law, but thousands and thousand of British people living abroad are mostly happy to watch the 6 o'clock news and feel like they still live in England.
We can only hope the "The United State of Europe" will become soon a law and forget the copyright problem
Yours
Giulio

p.s. The licence is my wife name )(-red

Hello to all :)

"The United States of Europe", nice joke :p
I'd really like to see that one day there will be a law which can let us see in whole Europe (from the Canaries to the Ural and from Iceland to Cyprus) with small dishes, let'S say 60cm inside a paneuropean footprint like the Hotbird Widebeams, all the channels of each country for free. No big dishes for european channels anymore and no encryption systems like Videoguard that don't even let you choose the receiver you like. It's a shame that one needs a second subscription so that you can see a channel and record another the same time, and if your children want to watch something else on their TV, a 3rd subscription ? No folks. I am glad that the Topfield 5000 PVR let'S you watch 2 programs the same time and record a 3rd one with 1 subscription card. The problem is, it doesn't work with Sky Digital because there is no existing Videoguard CAM )(-red
Ok back to reality: Sky Digital chose Videoguard, Viasat Sweden is also going to switch to it, Italian Stream uses Videoguard and Yes (Israel) has also chosen Videoguard.
Concerning the narrow beams: There is not only Astra 2D using it, but have a look at the Nordic beams of Sirius 2/3 and Thor 2.
Spain would also have a national beam on the lost Astra 1K. The conclusion is that it'S just the beginning of the whole story, i don'T hope so either.
Some things, that must have been said.

Long live the small dishes for normal TV consumption and the bigger motorized ones for the DXers ;)

Greetings, Chris

Not exactly. VideoGuard is a product of NDS, which is a firm owned by News Corporation (parent company of Sky, FOX, etc...)

Sky isn't their only client though: NDS VideoGuard is used by broadcasters throughout the world, including DirecTV in the United States and Telepiu' here in Italy.

Cheers.

thing is for new 'customers' ie sweden or whoever, wouldnt that mean a total replacement of the box to incorporate videoguard ?

because i thought the whole thing about videoguard was incorpoarated on the motherboard of digiboxes..?

Sorry, i didn't have the intention to change the topic. I am just a little angry about the national TV stations all over Europe.
BBCs are hard to receive, swedish SVTs ones also, spanish TVEs ones not at all since they are on Hispasat in Powerview only for terrestrial distribution. Why not use the swiss method ?
They send all their state own stations over Hotbird Widebeams and wherever you are in Europe since you are swiss you can get a card by a small fee, simple and fair. And for the not-swiss there is a special mix program as BBC Prime, SVT Europa, TVE int,..
I really cannot understand why for example all the german stations except of the Premiere Pay TV can send their programs without encryption to 2/3 of Europe.
Anyway this is not a technical problem. So here this thought ends, seems not to be popular in these days to think like that.
The reason for posting my comment here was that i don't see a section in the forum where to start discussions like this one and since so many people are struggling to catch the now weak BBCs maybe think similar. In any case you can pm me.

Here we go on with the technical discussion...

Little unfair to stamp on the thread like that expat :confused

How many times have we started a discussion about sending re-inforcements - and then ended up at a dance?

My letter of complaint to the BBC made reference to simulcrypting (as a possible solution for us).

At some point I might have brought the subject up here (god help me) :) Either way, these guys have raised some valid points: if I say so meself.

By the by and before I sour the cream ...........

Most definitely on topic - I received word from (sic) the only known person in Berlin to receive Astra 2D. I wrote to him last year. He informed me that he had a 125cm dish and was happily watching Coronation Street (on a clear day).

Regarding this years BBC shenanigans, I wrote back and asked if everything was still OK. Nope, came the reply - he says he can't receive Astra 2D at all

Sominks up?

Have Fun,

Mark.
