Basically not doing the garage thing, or attatching to my house so now thinking about the conifer trees at the rear of my garden.

ive cut away the branches up to about 1.5 meter high so all you can see is the tree with no branches.

So could i attatch the dish to the tree ? has anyone done a similar thing ?

How stable is the tree?
Surely you don't want the dish to move at all, especially in windy weather, as it is enough if it moves just by one degree to get the dish out of focus.

How far is this tree from where your viewing room would be?
You should try to have the shortest distance as a lengthy coaxial cable can reduce the signal strength until it reaches the receiver input.

25Mts of quality cable won't give you any problems :)

Yes, I have attached a dish to a tree, I just used a wall mount and 2.5 inch no10 woodscrews. I only had it up a few days though, and then found a better place. Although my tree is well established Cherry with a reasonably wide trunk ( 8 inches say).

The main problem that you would have, I imagine is that as the tree grows, you will have to keep re-adjusting the dish

Not just that Robbo, every spring and autumn as the sap rises and falls the dish will probably move out of alignment as the trunk swells, also it should be noted that even giant oak trees do actually move in the wind and the roots allow for this so yet another reason for possible problems. However having said all that if there is not another avenue to be explored I would just go for it and see what happens

Yes, the tree will move a bit, so try to mount the dish as low as possible to the ground, a reasonably thick tree will not move a lot lower down. Just for information, my 1.2 M motorised dish is mounted on a pole that is way too thin and also exposed to wind, so there is constant movement of the dish, and when there is light wind you can clearly see it moving about. However I hardly ever lose signal, only when there is heavy rain. So movement is not ideal, but if the dish is reasonably large it will be ok, especially if you only go for 28 east.

I used the one that I got included with my kit from Maplin.

It looks something like this:

except that mine had two separate top arms, rather than being one piece as show.

I was then able to bend the arms so that they 'fitted' the trunk.

Let me get this correct, the dish will be looking away from us in those pictures, if that is the case the dish is going to have to be high up, as the fence is in the way, the trees in my opinion are too thin and will sway too much in the wind at a hight of 6 to 8 feet. Also you may have neighbour problems if they are forced to look at a dish in fixed to a tree all year round from their back window.

As we don't know the direction it needs to point, as Topper said, we can't comment.
Tell us the direction first.

Why not save yourself a lot of future hassle and us a metal 2" or 3" pole, Just dig a suitable hole, plonk in the pole (Making sure its plumb) and pour in some concrete.

It may seem like more work now, but it will save you adjusting the dish on the tree every time there is some growth/movement in the tree.

Those trees seem tall an thin trunked, they will sway in the wind, the higher you go the worse it will be.

Consider 2" patio mount for mounting your dish at the base of your garden.

SM :)
