Auto-updating cards?

If I go on and buy a programmer, let's say an Elvis programmer, would I then be able to make cards which auto-updates themselves?
I've got a goldcard for my Viaccess cam, which auto-updates itself. It works perfectly. Will I continue to auto-update?
What's the good things about auto-updating cards?
And the bad ones?
How do you make an auto-updating card?
Is it some special HEX-files you have to use?
Can silver/fun cards be programmed to auto-updating themselves?

The autoupdate files require a valid key to make them work, then as long as the system doesn't change they should be OK. Now finding a valid key is another thing altogether, the advantages af having an autoupdate card is of course convenience.
