DM 800 HD + hopefully a motorised dish soon

Hi all. I am new to the set up of a motorised dish. i received my 80cm dish, motor, sat finder and all brackets yesterday. i would have loved to have gotten it all up and running myself but i am a bit stuck so all help and suggestions of installers would be greatly appreciated.

the wall im mounting on is pretty much a bang on due south wall. my motor is set at 0deg. am i right in believing that the motor at 0deg should be pointing at due south? as well as all these issues i doubt i can lock onto 1w for the ease of installation because the wall is in the way.

so help on my issues like i said would be met with extreme gratitude and/or suggestions of decent installers who dont charge the earth would be great. i have had a quote to set it up for £90. im thinking thats a bit steep as a friend of mine got his done for £40

anyway thanks all

sorry if this is in the wrong place also lol

Apologies, have restored original title and removed subsequent posts.

Most installers will charge 1.5 to 2 hours for a from scratch motorised installation as this is what it will take when you include setting up the receiver and scanning the extreme points on the arc.

If you can find someone to do it for £40, then snatch their arm off, as they can't make money at that sort of rate and will probably do a second class installation.

Thanks for sorting it out! although i am still really annoyed with what it was changed to etc without actually understanding what was read!

personally as money is on the very tight side if i can find it for £40 quid i would snap their arm off, however, i dont want a second rate job as you dont know how long it will last.
i have installed my bracket with heavy duty clamp bolts in the brickwork. its just the setup of the motor which is confusing me as the amount of jargon that is in the manual has just fried my brain. i dontl like giving up easy lol.

can anyone confirm that with the motor set at 0deg do i aim at 1w? or would i need to use my receiver to move the motor to 1w?

so, if it is like a 2hour job what is the average PH rate?

cheers

cheers for that, i will have a proper butchers at that tomorrow.

as for being a competent DIYer, i can easily recondition car engines, and do engine transplants, so im hoping this is not as hard as that.
you know what its like when you read jargon, just adds to the confusion and then you find ya head banging on a brick wall lol

You are well capable of installing a motor dish. You just need to spend the time reading the guides and relevant threads first :)

Did your friend have the same system as yourself.
Is he based in the same area ?
Is your friend happy with the results ?

The difference between £40 and £90 is £65, which really won't get much in terms of quality, from a man with a van, ladders, tools and other overheads.

As Rolf says, bite your friend's hero

lol.

£90 is a very reasonable price to setup a motorised dish. Though it depends on what actually needs doing.

£40 is far too cheap. I would not be confident it was done properly for that low,

yeah my friend is not far from me, exactly same setup (hes the reason im doing this) and is more than happy with the results! only thing he is annoyed with is because of his location his dish wont go to the west lol

i asked him for the number of the person but he has lost the contact lol

£40 does seem to be too good to be true. but i suppose its because he was a mate of a mate lol.

im not usually a defeatist and always like to see things through to the end, but if i do come unstuck i will have to find an installer.

all that needs doing is the motor and dish being put up. i already have the cable and box running as im using the old sky dish.

it looks to me that £90 aint such a unreasonable price as most of you are all saying so. i obviously didnt expect it to cost 8 hours of my wage lol

One is expensive according to yourself, and the lower is way too cheap for setting up according to those replying, even though there is now less work required than you mentioned in your opening post.

£65 (as a halfway figure, lol) would on average get you an hour of time, for somebody in a van travelling a radius of around 15 miles from their workplace round here. From what you have posted so far, this is still unlikely to sort out all potential issues to a point where both parties are pleased with the results. Tuning in of the DM800 on a steerable system alone can take that long.

Since his installer is no longer contactable, the figure of £40 can't be used as a base price since the work is not going to be honoured. You could always find somebody tomorrow, in a van with some murals on the side, willing to earn some pocket-money outside normal working hours though, as the tools they have on board, and damage they could cause to either your property or your equipment would be outside their scope of responsibility.

Can't your equipment supplier recommend a local installer ?

hi, sorry for the slowness on replying.

i have the dish all set up. the motor is at 0degs and the dish is set 100% true on the motor pointing at due south.

my box talks to the motor so i suppose thats a start. when going through my settings my box went straight round to where 28.2 is based on my long/lat.
i done loads of fine tuning with the elevation of the dish, double checking the elevation of the motor and stepping east and west to try to get a lock.

but nothing. even my sat meter didnt register anything.

i am rather baffled now as to whats going on.

Channel Hopper, finding someone wanting a bit of extra pocket money would be handy however i will suffer this a little bit longer because there must be something that i am missing.

What would help is for you to post up a selection of pics to our server - much easier to spot obvious issues than talking round it at a distance.
