Instead of paying £10 per month for the ability to record/pause/rewind from Sky is there another option with hardware cost only?

I know that I could connect a normal PVR to the scart outlet from a Sky box, however this would only record the sky channel that was on at that time.....so advance programming would be difficult. I would have to program both the sky receiver and the PVR.

Also, Dreambox could be an option, but looks like high set-up costs.
I only want the freeview type channels, so was thinking of the £150 Freesat setup, but would also like to be able to record/pause/rewind. I imagine that adding a Dreambox 7025 is going to be another £400.

Any cheaper options?

Wait a few days. There are strong rumours the Sky+ recording tax will be dropped soon - we are waiting for an official announcement

Thanks for the info on the rumours...I'll hold off for a while. If this happens then Freesat & Sky+ box would be perfect.

I cannot find anything on the internet on this rumour....have you found any links to this?

Strictly speaking, you cannot connect a normal PVR by scart to your sky box, it would have to be a DVD/HD recorder or something of that ilk.

I take it that terrestrial freeview is not an option. I don't know whether the sat FTA channels (all BBC and ITV) are all you require ("freeview type channels"?), in which case Topfield make some nice satellite PVRs. The dual tuner version is not particularly cheap but then you wouldn't expect that because of the amount of hardware in there. You would lose the soft encryped freeview channels like C5, though.

Not an easy solution, old Rupie has got lots of people by the £s.
