My Satellite Setup
1) Tecnomate TM-1000 CI.
2) Moteck DiSEqC HH Motor.
I am a absolute novice to this satellite thingy and after looking at a whole host of websites I am pretty confused when it comes to finding reasonably straight forward instructions that are clear and practical to install a dish and (the trick is here) a USALS motor which I purchased after reading all about USALS and how easy it is to use (NOT). I have been trying for few days to get any signal on my Technomate 1000 CI with no success and would appreciate your guidance on reliable (and comprehensable) websites that would take me through this process step by step. Thanks.

Everybody is a novice at some point, if you are like me I never intend being anything else. My first suggestion is that you try to walk before doing the 60mtr dash. For the moment ignore the motor. First you need to get a signal with your system as though it is a fixed dish. (By the way you do not mention the size of your dish) Is your dish an offset or a prime focus? Is this a brand new set up or is it a motorisation of a fixed setup?? If it is new then surely there must be some instructions for the H-H setup. Here is a good thread for starters

Use the powerful search utility to get information e.g. do a search for usals or dish setup and read the information provided. There are many people here that can and are willing to help but some things you will have to do yourself. Good luck.

Thanks very much for the reply. Something rang a bell here. I thought all my installation was absolutely spot on and the motor and dish angles were both exactely according to the instructions. Unfortunately my dish bracket doesn't have a scale and I had to use an angle finder to measure the angle of the dish inclination which is supposed to be 26 degree or so. However, my dish if (OFFSET) and not (prime focus) in which case the 26 degree elevation may not apply and that is probably why my dish appears more up-tilted than my neighbour's sky dish which is also an offset. I wonder if that is really the problem and if it is the case then how can one measure the elevation for an offset dish. By the way my dish is an 80 cm one.

The specification for an offset dish should say what the offset is in degrees.

The data is published by any good dish manufacturer.

Thanks Burnham Beech but my dish is old (was there when I moved in) and I don't have any instructions. I'll try and look for the make if anything is written on it and search for the info online.

I have noticed that offset dishes of different makes can appear to be different up-tilted even if pointing to the same satellite. So this does not have necessarily to be wrong.

You can find the right elevation of the dish on the motor simply by trying to locate your southernmost satellite.

Or maybe it would be faster to try to locate the same satellite as your neighbour first. You know the right azimuth of the dish because it is the same as your neighbour's and you only need to find the right elevation of the dish. But you have to turn your motor tube to the right position for that satellite (using USALS) before locating it, of course. (You can find only approximate setup of the dish elevatin and the motor azimuth this way. You have to adjust it using your southernmost satellite afterwards to achieve maximum signal quality.)

One more thing: don't forget to set up your latitude and longitude in your receiver or USALS will not work properly.

Hi

The offset angle of my Funke dish is 24degrees and the offset angle of my Gibertini dish is 21degrees.
This might give you some starting points to work from.
