Part of cost cuts:
BBC Four and CBBC to move to online only
BBC World News and BBC News to merge altogether
BBC Radio 4 Extra to go online only
Oxford and Cambridge will lose their independent news services

I wonder if it’s just a play to try to renegotiate funding. BBC News and World merging makes sense since it’s basically already true, so I can’t really see how it would save that much.

The target demographic for BBC4 are so much more unlikely to even know how to access the channel online than the BBC3 demographic. It's designed to deliver the result that someone, somewhere wants.

There were rumours services were to close - this is a sure fire way of ensuring the audience figures for BBC4 are so awful closure is inevitable. We watch BBC4 lots (recorded on the Sky box) - and as soon as it goes online we wont be watching it any more. We dont see any need for any of our AV kit to be connected to the internet.

It’s annoying because it’s just optics. The costs to distribute BBC Four must be really low.
They should never have been made to pay for BBC World Service when the UK government are the ones that benefit.

Some muppet on BBC News talking about the move to digital.....

The supposed 'upgrade' is not to be delivered for another three years, plenty of time for Capita/TVLicensing to screw them over before moving onto better pickings.

BBC News and BBC World to merge into one BBC News channel, launches April 2023.

"BBC management has gone out of the way not to describe the changes as a merger of the two existing news channels"

Sounds great :-doh

I suspect there will be plenty of knives in backs as the 'top drawer' presenters jostle for the remaining slots.

As pointed out by a516digital on Twitter the retained presenters for the 'new' BBC News channel just happen to be those who currently front the BBC World 11am to 10pm schedules.

Quite a few of the presenters have quit rather than go through the redeploy process

Pretty much confirms the BBC News channel is being scrapped and replaced by a BBC World simulcast with UK content during the adverts, plus existing BBC1/2 news shows.
