Hi Guys,
I ve heard that BBC (not sure about itv) are planning to move their satellite signal to astra 2a or 2b in place if its current 2d.
Does anyone know about it??. If it will happen , it certanly would help those viewers from around europe.
thanks

Dont believe everything you see on the internet - it wishful thinking Im afraid. This comes up at least twice a year and it must be about 6 months since the last one did the rounds.. :D

Why would the Beeb move when the reason for them going onto 2D in the first place was so they could transmit in the clear because of the "UK footprint"

Unless theres some pretty serious frequency swap-arounds theres nowhere near enough capacity free for the Beeb to move.

Until I hear something official then it aint going to happen.

Seems unlikely this year (2007), BUT it raises the interesting point of what
will happen when the 2D satellite reaches the end of its useful life. Can
anyone tell us when that is likely to be, and when will the 2A and 2B ones
time-expire? What plans are known to be in place to replace these birds?
And how much HD will there be for BBC channels now that we know their
budget has been reduced by the UK Government - might THAT mean a change
of heart by the BBC bosses who might now wish to increase their european
audience using 'non-HD' channels. Looks to me that we MIGHT see some
useful changes say in 2008, but WHAT changes? Any views/comments on
all this will be welcomed by this Cyprus Anorak!
Cheers,
Geoff

2D EOL is around 2015 assuming there no technical failures in the meantime.

Expected EOL for all the astra 2's:

2A - 2013
2B - 2014
2C - 2016
2D - 2015

2E is reported on various sites to be launched around 2010, and there will have to be a steady replacement of capacity after then although its quite possible 2E will be designed as a big b*stard taking over 2A and 2B :D

The people at S*y are well aware of the fact that a rather significant part of their subs is coming from abroad, and I am sure that as long as we talk about money here they won't try doing something that will bring their revenues down. On the other hand BBC and ITV have a different policy and so the 2D bird suits their needs best.

Can you explain this topic of Government reducing budget for BBC HD channels?
Where would they put the extra channels?
The transponders on 2D are full now,to start the first hd channel they had to move bbc parliament and some interactive channels on 2A.
With all this fuss about coverage restriction, now the BBC have less space on satellite than on freeview!

How do you work that out?? The BBC have 5 full transponders on 2D and 1 on 2B all to themselves, which is vastly more bandwidth than they have on FreeView.

Analoguesat,my sentence meant to be a little bit ironic.

Of course the 5 tps on 2d have more bandwith than freeview.
But they are filled with all regional variations, while on freeview only one region is needed in each zone.

In fact the interactive channels, which broadcast many of sports programs, are on 2b,as they have no alternative.
That's why I asked if you knew more about extra channels and Government reducing HD budget.

:DYou need to be precise when you post or someone will pick you up on it :D

The BBC HD test was always planned as a one year test - and was reasonably well publicised as such - so why are people bleating when it taken off?? It will be back sooner or later
