This was the original message:

Subject:
Why do we have an England football manager?

Posting:
Everyone of them since the 1980s has been rubbish. Sven took the
biscuit and a hefty pay packet with it!!

But seriously, I am not a football fan but why do we need a manager.
None of them can do the job, so what is the point? Why is there a Captain
- that's a meaningless position as well.

I say scrap both jobs and just put our football players on the field.
Cross your fingers and see what happens.

They can't be any worse! ;)

Posted in the right section. And it wasn't "off topic" as Steve was in the news that day; plus, other threads made reference to Steve and "what a good job he was doing", but were allowed to stay.

You see, the BBC don't accept "rude" comments about the England manager. Nor do they like you slating their DJs. ;) :D

By the way, this message was posted in the right section. I was criticizing the BBC! ;) In Critics' Corner. :p

No, critics corner is for critiques on films, television and the arts, sports section is for critiques on sport or sport related subjects. ;)

Yeah, try 606 - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/606/default.stm. Nice bunch, although they can be very determined in their opinions.

As for the subject itself, I don't see how not having any form of management would do any good. If you put a good manager in the role, they generally do a good job, and not always because they happen to have the best selection of players - Sir Alf Ramsey himself said they he picked the best team, not the best players.

Robson and Venables both did a great job but the FA didn't appreciate them. Trust the FA, only a bunch of mugs like them could appoint Barwick as head 'O'-red. Reading on Wikipedia just now, he says of Robson: 'He also led England to the semi-finals in the 1990 World Cup where they lost to West Germany on penalties. Robson has since said that not a day goes by when he does not think about the semi-final and other choices he might have made'. I must myself plead guilty to occassionaly thinking of ways we should have beat Portugal last year, my goodness we should have won that O-no

The BBC have been slated by the FA for its coverage and comments of the England Managers Job.

Mr's Lineker and Hansen have been pointed at for not getting behind the manager and criticising him too much. Hence in last nights introductions on MOTD, Mr Lineker made a point of saying "how good the draw and win over the last week was..."
