I personally think england have lost their way since he was dropped, we need someone with a little flair who can turn the game with one pass or free kick.
We cannot go on playing the way we used to play in the 70's

I think it was a mistake to get rid of him altogether in the first place, that was more to do with the manager trying to stamp his authority on the team, than anything else.

I have not seen an England team member who has put more into a game than he has on many occasions.

The way the England team have been playing we would be better off with Beckham's missus playing with the rest of the useless tart's.

The worse England team that I have seen in the last 50 year's, and the worse manager.

That's it, rant of the month over.:-rofl2

I'd love to say yeah, but I don't think on balance it would be a good idea now:

a) Having him for two games is pretty short-term.

 Not fair to the other right wingers; Lennon, Bentley, Wright-Philips.

c) The media storm would be extreme unhelpful.

After Bentley's performance tonight and against Italy at Wembley, I think we have pretty good prospects on the right as far as I can see.

Salty25 You cant compare Lennon with beckham.. totally diferent leaugue of player.. Lennon = Kid Beckham = Experianced.

Wright Philips = Not played enough

Bentley = Who?

Salty, who said i was talking about 2 games?

Not fair to the other right wingers; Lennon, Bentley, Wright-Philips.

its about whos good enough, not being fair....

i personally would pick a team for the here and now.... and that would include Beckham, in the future that may well change. but for now... we need him.

he doesnt necessarily have to play on the wing either... the Lampard and Gerrard partnership isnt exacly setting the world alight is it?

thats not anything against them 2 players, they are world class without doubt... but they cant play together.

i would like to see Gerrard and Beckham with Lennon on wing? see how that works out.... Becks and Lennon could do overlaps to deliver crosses

But I just can't see past the short-termness of bringing back Beckham, it would be a insult to the other players to be honest.

To write off Bentley is especially unfair - watching him vs Italy U21 and vs Albania last night, he seems to be one of the few players to raise their game in the white shirt, and if Lennon deserved his chance, I think Bentley does too.

Drop Lampard - sometimes you just have to accept its not going to work, and Gerrard is the better all-round player. Hargreaves or Carrick, or even King in the holding role, that's pretty straight forward. J Cole on the left, and if not avaliable Lennon knows the role, and Barry and Downing are also candidates.

I can't see how it would be an insult to the other players Salty and I certainly don't think that the other players would consider it so, just heard anyway that he has been brought back into the squad. :)

Hmm, I read it a different way. A great player and hard working former captain of the England team, who was summarily dropped from the team for political reasons, which has since proved to be an expensive (performance wise) mistake. ;)

I have to say i agree with Rolf here, if without him England had won many games everyone would be saying how its better without Beckham.... Fact is, its just the opposite.

And to be honest to loose your place in ANY team to someone like David Beckham is definately not an insult.

His skill is such that just 1 kick anywhere in a 90 minute game can win games and get us to the European Championship (Remember the Greece game)

in my opinion, there still isnt anyone better who is eligable for England duty at Crossing a ball or taking free kicks.

Good luck to him... and the England team anyway ;)

PS
thanks to Maclaren for using his brain and not letting pride stand in the way..... you should never say never to ANY player ever!!!

If McClaren is going to play 4-4-2 I would hope he will at least try Hargreaves and Beckham as the two central player's with Lennon on the right and may be Barry on the left.
Would put Gerrard and Lampard on the bench as they have been rubbish for England for too long now, may be time for a shake up.
Still think the left side of mid-field is our weak spot, but would try Barry with his left foot as it will give us a better balanced side, opposed to Joe Cole with his right.

Well, I hope it is only for these two games, it'd be a real low if we started selecting a player plying his trade in the sub-standard MLS.

i personally would pick a team for the here and now.... and that would include Beckham, in the future that may well change. but for now... we need him.

I'll tell exactly what happened - McClaren sat in his office, thought to himself "how do I keep the media quiet, keep my job, and even if we lose deflect the blame on to someone else?". Beckham is the perfect fall-guy.

I think the whole thing proves McClaren has no long-term plan looking beyond Euro 2008. Why did he drop him in the first place if "Everyone knows David's attributes and he's a big-game player who can help us win in Estonia"? Surely to goodness anyone sensible would have kept him in the squad at least and try to blood the young players in their roles, under the guidance of Beckham - why not make him part of the coaching set-up?

If Lampard isn't dropped now McClaren is completely blind to the facts :-rofl2

You can't insult other players by playing Beckham!!The other players don't have a right to be in the team, this has to be earned. If the other players were good enough there is no way they would be dropped!!!

If anyone thinks that a better right-sided player has come through since Beckham was dropped you must live on another planet quite frankly. Have you seen his performances for Real Madrid over the last couple of months. He's dragged Madrid up the table.

There's another problem in the psyche of a lot of people in this country. We don't seem to be able to separate people's lifestyles with their sporting ability. Yes Becks makes news wherever he goes and he has HER in tow but it's not stopped him playing at the highest level. He does a lot of work for charities as well .... a lot of it unseen. Compare him to some of the bar room brawlers who play in the premiership ..and for England. I know which I prefer.

No one is saying that there is anyone better right now than Beckham, I think people would be foolish to argue that - begs the question why he was dropped really!

No, I think its about long term planning. You dont want to find yourself in a situation where you have ill-prepared players in a major tournament. You have to play player that aren't so good right now as the ones that are about to leave the squad - that's the same in alot of things in life, experience almost always makes you better.

In my mind, Beckham should have been part of that long term planning, by playing and gradually allowing other players to fit into the position in friendlies/2nd half of games, perhaps even doing a little coaching. I still don't understand why no sees him as a good holding midfielder considering his passing ability, lack of previous pace, and fairly good tackling ability (which, like most things his done in his career, he could improve upon).

As for the 'insult' remark, ok that was slightly tabloid, but if I was Bentley I'd feel agrived that McC didn't have the confidence in me to play me against the mighty Estonia.

Long-term planning is a good idea in principle salty but almost impossible in practice. So many players drop out of England squads (especially for friendlies), either by themselves or through their club manager that there just is no continuity. I don't know the answer to that one.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. I think it's a cronic problem with the set-up - the Under 21's certainly aren't given the respect them deserve, only last week did Mark Hughes (ok, Welsh but still) say that it woud be of more benefit to Bentley for him not to play in the U21 champs at all - thankfully he was picked and I'm sure will have a good tourney (looking forward to watching that!), but the fact is the clubs don't value it.
