Well it is almost every month that MS attempt to trash the laptop with their monthly DMHTG updates that either lose some or all of your files or lose your profile and create a temporary one, resulting in your files not being available on the temp profile. For that reaon a full backup id done every month but in this case it was a complete one off when that screen appeared and has not happened since, I do not believe there is anything approaching a hijack taking place, remote monitoring perhaps despite all options being revoked.
TBH, I was very suspicious of W10 when it arrived and was, over time "forced" on use, but having had W10 (both Home & Pro) on various m/cs for several years, I've/we've never lost any files or profiles (although I do know of at least one who has - an "IT Pro" or at least he seems to have been before he retired!) -, or had temporary profiles created due to Windows updates - part of the reason being, I think, at least in terms of stability and data security, has been that none of my/our data files are stored in the default Windows locations but on separate partitions on the disk

In that context, none of the m/cs have ever had Windows 10 reinstalled since they were originally "upgraded"

Thus, IMHO, there's a bit of "pot luck" involved, but, with careful management, W10 can be, and usually is, very stable and safe - and so, as a relative "computer illiterate", I'm fairly happy with it.

As for @Lazarus' "problem" with his Linx tablet, I suspect that was probably the result of trying to force a low-end tablet with very limited "disk" space to handle what is, TBH, a very resource/disk space-heavy OS - thus "horses for courses". OTOH, SWMBO's 12 yr (and counting!) Dell 1525 laptop with 4GB memory still handles W10 fairly well, albeit that it's pretty slow and really needs that SSD I bought for it several months ago!

No, sir.

Plenty of space.

The issue is only too well known and stems from a compatibility issue with the Intel Baytrail Graphics Drivers that nobody has the will or resources to overcome.

I had four or five years of relatively untroubled use of Win 10 and the "problem" has led to the Tablet having a new - and improved - lease of life. Silver lining.

Indeed, I was obliged to use Fedora, as opposed to eg Mint or Ubuntu, as Fedora comes with a native 32 bit Bootloader ( required for the Linx, despite it using 64 bit Applications!). You can f*ig adding a 32 bit bootloader to other distros, but very Kernel update wipes it out. Who needs t'hassle?

Quite. On the other hand, even "quality" kit can disappoint.

This Linx cost me 125 sovs and is fantastic value.

Some time ago I was advised by a guy in the info tech game to use the big K security on my devices. I have two laptops, one running Win10, the other running Win8.1. Since loading it I have had no problems at all, I even use it on my mobile. OK, it does use some resources on all devices, but does not noticeably slow things down. It also blocks you from going to unsafe sites and updates it´s virus info at least daily. I would recommend it to anybody, be they a computer literate or not. Apparently it is recommended by several police agencies and governments around the world.

Another thing that is free and very good is " SuperAntiSpyWare " it does a very thorough search of your device and advises of problems it can solve or has to quarantine

AH... SO "Linux" isn't "without its problems"!

Am I surprised? NOT in the least! "Linux" is a multitude of "options" (and thus "sins"), and thus has even more "risk" for making the "wrong" choice. At least W10 has a relatively narrow range of options, and with fairly decent "corporate backup"and support on a wide range of websites and forums - where will "you" (meaning the "general you") be able to find that "safely" if you, like the vast majority of computer-device users, don't have any real idea of where/what to look for??

Unlike Windows, you can get under the bonnet of Linux and resolve problems.

It is also possible to get under the bonnet of Windows, problem is you find another bonnet, then another. The best time to try is Easter

There are sniffers on many so called 'help' sites these days and one or two forums and just like the now infamous Covid-19, you do not see it or smell it but it can still finish you off.

The website (and company) has been around for some 20 years, a portion of the profits also ends up at a number of charitable foundations

Nope, definitely talking medical pharmaceuticals, where they insist people pay thousands for a small box of pills that could save their lives, and yet a small plushie depiction of a virus is apparently more insulting... :confused

Oh well, difference of opinion I guess...
