Hi Guys

What is considered to be the best dish for Cyprus Im not talking about size but make and model. Who are considered to be the best manufacturers and are they worth it?

I have seen the Astra 2D website and they state a 3.05m 1 piece aluminium AMS Canada dish with Invacom LNB gives perfect reception from 7:00 to 21:00 and some breaking but still watchable from 21:00 to 22:00 and from 22:00 to 03:00 also OK. Not sure if there has been a typing error though as the heading has "3.5m solid aluminium dish AMS Cananda" but in the write up it says "3.05m solid 1 pce alum. dish AMS Cananda"

I was under the impression after 2.7m you cannot get 1 piece dishs?

My current dish is a 2.7m with the quad Invacom and a Pace 2600. There are nights when my and BBC and ITV (tyne tees) are perfect and I mean perfect. Other nights the BBC is there but not watchable while the ITV is watchable but breaks ups.

I know my dish definately needs to be realigned and I am going to add the adjustable feedhorn, if this does not help improve my reception, I will definately consider going bigger, this is why I ask which dish is best.

I saw the thread on the Jonsa dishs and the installer who is checking my set-up will probably be supplying one of those as he is the rep for big4tv. They seemed to get a good review in the thread.

I am opposite the beach in Limassol along the road that runs parallel to the beachfront just abit further down from the TGI if that helps.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated

Yan

Hi Yan

First I think the feedhorn and tune 'tweak' is most efficent way forward. I have found significant improvements with adjustable feedhorns on all dishes that I've seen them fitted to - it may be just enough for what you need. Is the quad invacom a 0.5 or a 0.3db model?

Hi Nick

Thaks for the reply

The invacom is a 0.3 as far as I am aware, but good point I should check that, I requested from the installer that he fits an invacom LNB meaning the 0.3 (I didnt realise they come in 0.5 aswell) but I dont know if he put on the 0.5 or 0.3.

Is there any markings on the actual LNB that will tell me if it is 0.3 or 0.5db?

If its a new one then its almost certainly a 0.3 - they tend to be white and the 0.5s are dark (but the colour thing may not be hard and fast :-) If it hasn't weathered too much then it will still be written on it.

The 4.2 are good but come in pieces and made frome steel .The 3.7 are 2 piece and just as good for limassol, and made from aluminium, worth thinking about if you are on the seafront. How many floors on your building? I put up a 3m further for a pub down the road just past the zoo and have heard of no problems up to now.

Hi Simon

The dish is a out about 4-5 storeys up.

Was the 3m dish you put in the pub a Jonsa and was it 1 piece?

Sorry Simon excuse my naivety on the subject, its why I am posting in the 1st place, but what is DH? Is it an abbreviation for dish or is it the actual make?

Also I assume a solid 1 piece dish will be better than a 2 or 3 etc piece dish.

What can I expect to pay for 1 piece dish of about 3m?

Was it the Ship Inn where you fitted the dish by any chance?

Thanks
Yan

What make and size is your current dish. I ask because your profile says 2.4m and you post says 2.7m....a 2.4 will need more than just a tweak

I was told by the original chap who installed my dish that it was a 2.4m then the new chap comes along and tells me that it is indeed a 2.7m.

I still need to change my profile although to be honest i really dont know and am taking what they tell me at face value.

I will get on the roof and check a few things out and come back with some hopefully more reliable information

2 things have come out of my trip to the roof where the satellite dish is.

1)The LNB is in fact the 0.5 and not the 0.3db as I thought
2)The dish measure 2.4m across(left to right) and 2.7m in height(top to bottom)

I dont know if this means my dish is a 2.4m or a 2.7m, however I assume just by changing the 0.5db Invacom LNB toa 0.3db Invacom LNB should hopefully improve my reception of BBC1 and ITV correct?

On top of this when I have my dish realigned and add the adjustable feedhorn then perhaps I could get away witha 2.7m instead of having to upgrade to 3m?

The info I hav regarding the dish is that it is solid 1 piece dish. The original instaler told me it was russian, the second installer offered me money for it about £250-£300 so I am assuming he thinks it is a decent dish, he told me he may have use for them in Paphos and that his enginner has always wanted to play around with them (ie this particular make and model)

Sounds to me that it may be a 2.7m Supral dish. If you look round the back of it does it have a strengthener round with holes in it? Post a picture if you like (of the dish that is
icon12.gif
)
Further to this if your LNB is infact a quad Invacom universal (ie all one piece without a metal feed horn bolted on to it) & I assume the characteristics are similar to the 0.3db, then it is the incorrect LNB for the job as these are only any good up to 1.6m offset dishes. I would suggest you change this for a mti universal 0.3db (about c£25) or much better still, an invacom quad C120 LNB with an special offset feedhorn (together c£75)

Cheers

Thats exactly how my dish is at the back, I will post a picture as soon as I get my camera back (lent it to a friend).

What are these dishes like, any good? Also, is it classed as a 2.4m or 2.7m?

The LNB is also how you described it, it is written on it Invacom 0.5db and it is the quad as you state. Definately will change it for the Invacom C120 LNB 0.3db

Thanks Nick, appreciate your help.

Your dish is a russian supral 2.4m offset or less probably an andersen offset.the supral looks like a ufo from behind with all those circles round the diameter.it is a very good quality dish for that size, and the size is quoted from its width not height. You are getting very good results with your dish for your area.from experience these dishes get bbc with invacom and feed from pissouri west wards.the adjustable feed is only for prime focus(round dishes).
DH is the make of my dish(blarney stone),but there are two or three versions of the same dish over here.Beware of the cheaper ones.
I didnt install the dish at the ship inn but have worked on it once. That one is a 3m anderson 4 piece prime focus.Very good gain but much more expensive.
Is your lnb all in one plastic case or does it have an attached aluminium or beige feedhorn?

Good news is according poeple I know (they know who they are
icon12.gif
) these are very good dishes. It is best to class them as 2.7m offset - an installer would NEVER sell you one as a 2.4m.

I have recently done some work on a couple of these dishes - one of them had issues similar to yours......it take it you get sky family pack, sports, movies with the possible exeption of movies12&3 some of the time (assuming you subscribe to them) but little or no BBC or ITV?

I have no idea about reception in that part of town (I'm just a hobbiest) Simon etc will know more. But in Ypsonis I modified a similar dish and now they clear BBC til 6 or 7pm and loads more ITV....admittedly I think they will fair better as they are further west, but its hopefully still progress for you.

There are issues with the mounting of this modified setup ie standard LNB is 40mm replacement is 27mm. If you need help then let me know.

Hope that helps

Cheers

I stand corrected on the size thing...but I still think an installer would sell it as a 2.7m and frankly it is better than a 2.4m anyway

You mean the yanks have logged in to this forum?Actually i turned off outlook express and now i am typing and the words come up straight away, weird.
Anyway, they are classed 2.4 offsets in their brochures, but the rogue traders can getaway with calling them 2.7's because you can measure the length in front of the customer and he will believe. There was a post by a mr cooper once, who was told by the installer it was a 2.7 but turned out to be 2.4m.i cant name the installers obviously but they advertise their cheapies everywhere. It could have been a genuine mistake though ({})
