Just starting to feed hunt with my azbox prem hd+. Done a blind scan on 10e & 7e and picked up quiet a few new ch. Watching racing uk today on it. It took about 30 to 40 mins to scan each sat. How fast or slow is this??.

Pretty crap really. Not bad for software blind scan but not of any practical use. Hardware blind scan is a lot quicker and if you narrow down what frequency the feeds normally appear on you should be able to get down to about 2 minutes per satellite. Or if that's not quick enough a spectrum analyser with known image superimposed will find feeds in seconds.

does anyone have a vantage 8000s ?

I'm after a hd receiver with hardware blind scan and this fits the bill spec wise, as I'm already impressed by the vantage x221ci I have and hope it is like the x200 for scanning or even better.

does anyone have the clarke tech 5200 because I have heard this has a decent blind scan on it and wonder what you thing of it ?

any other models of receiver to look at

Thanks, I had an idea that 40mins was too slow. Will have a look at the Vantage.

I've used the earlier Clark Tech machines - 3100 - (elsewhere) and can vouch for the tuner sensitivity and the ease of use. Not tried the 5200 though.

thanks i've been told they are just technomate receivers but with the clarke tech branding, both are made in the same factory ?

john_graydon, it seems the azbox premium plus is not hardware blind scan then by that time taken to scan a satellite, was that using 4mhz steps ?

Whilst there may be similarities, motherboard and chassis, I was not a fan of the Technomate mid range machines after the 1500, primarily because of the tuner sensitivity. I don't think it was a batch problem either as I have heard the same from others. The CI3100 however filled the gap nicely and outperformed other receivers in the same price range.

Having said that though I have installed a couple of the TM6800 machines and apart from a couple of quirks in the tuning menu(adding transponders is awkward ), the tuners and HD/SD selection is very good.

It's a lot of money for my liking. There's the Vantage 7100 and the 1100 too. Also Vantage 6000 but you'd need to check the spec. It's HD but not sure the tuner is S2.

Some people are raving about the Spiderbox blind scan which is supposed to be pretty fast when patched.

Personally I couldn't spend 400GBP on the Vantage 8000. I'd rather get a VU+ duo. Yes I know it doesn't have blind scan but it does have a whole lot more and can be used for streaming the 4:2:2 feeds to a PC for viewing. Also there are lots of feeds that are DVB-S/MPEG4 (monday night speedway, for example) that you could find with the Vantage 221 and view on any non-blind-scan HD receiver. And anyway even with the fastest blindscan receiver most feeds are already posted Satelliweb long before you have a chance to find them. To be quicker you'd need banks of blindscan receivers connected to an array of fixed dishes and even then you'd still miss loads of stuff.

Thread resurrected...

I have a Manhattan ST100 receiver which has blind scan. I find it to be fairly quick. Well, if I do a low symbol rate scan (4MHz steps) it can take a while if I scan right from 10700 to 12750 but on the whole, I find it bearable.

If anybody has experience of both the Manhattan and/or the Azbox/Spiderbox, how do the newer boxes compare to the old Manhattan, please? I ask because I'm interested in being able to resolve the increasing number of high definition and 4:2:2 signals.

Cheers! :)

ST100 is not so fast at blind scan. Manhattan XT is quicker and the Vantage boxes are quite a bit quicker. Azbox doesn't have hardware blind scan and I believe the Spiderbox doesn't either, which means things will be painfully slow.

If I was buying a box right now on a budget for blind scan I would go for the Vantage 1100S (around the 200 GBP mark). It will find and display MPEG4 and regular feeds. For 422 you could use a video card such as the WinTV Nova HD, which would play them once you have found them with the Vantage.
