Broadband severely increases security risk

Analysts have calculated that a broadband Internet connection is five times more vulnerable to a security breach than a dial-up connection.

"For those using DSL, the risk of being among those affected is much higher than among dial-up users. We estimate that DSL users are at five times greater risk of being affected by a security attack," the research organisation The Yankee Group claimed.

"'Always On', in other words, means 'Always Vulnerable'," the group added.

DSL is a much greater security risk because it allows a user to be constantly connected to the Web. While this is ideal for applications such as email and instant messenger, the downside is that it means more exposure to malicious hackers.

LOL, some of these focus groups do have a knack of stating the obvious. :)

Another reason is that with broadband you have a fixed IP address. Dial-up is more random.

What they also fail to add though, is that serious broadband users are often better equipped to fend off attacks and have Firewall and trojan sniffer protection.

I dodn't have a static IP, but I do of course retaing the ones I have for much longer than a dialup connection.
