Broadband Speed Part 2

The t**ts from BT OR were working on next house's line and managed to completely kill mine - no dial tone, nada.

After moaning at them on the side of the road, they reconnected it (apparently, it was a 'loose' wire) and I am back online. Only my sync speed dropped from 49000 to 40000..... looks like I've been put on a lower band because of all the reconnects.

Gah!
Try the bt site BTW Performance Test and on the second page put the land line number in and hit submit.

It can take up to a couple of hours for the system to catch up.

When my line sync speed or throughput drops that website is able to up my bandwidth.

It's worth a try, and good luck :)

For some reason I got this error:
The Performance Tester is currently unable to run a speed test for your broadband connection. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.

Anyway, I took the chance of upsetting the DLM by rebooting the router and, thankfully, it came back up to 49,000kbps.

Still have an intermittent fault on my line. Openreach have done some work on it over the last few days. The line keeps dropping to <30 mb.

It's ok at the moment:-

All the faults have been reported via this website BTW Performance Test

Well I have just discovered that my SonyVaio laptop is a limiting factor on my speedtest. As I was testing the setup today with BT I decided to plug my laptop direct into the router, the WIFI adaptor automatically diconnected and a speed test showed 50 Mb/s, this prompted me to investigate and reset the winsock connection

by opening a andminitrative version of CMD and typing netsh winsock reset and pressing Enter.
My laptop wifi speed immediately more than doubled from 15 Mb/s to 38 Mb/s, which is what I have endured for a number of months

True.

But the most demanding App re. Latency is our VOIP and it's perfect.

No echoes, no drop-outs. Just crystal clear quality, infinitesimally low cost and supreme reliability :p

First time doing one of these. I've been on Sky Fibre Unlimited for over 5 years now and despite some horror stories I've heard from others, I've never had any issues with them *touches wood*. Occassional dropouts every few months or so, usually down to work at the exchange but this tends to happen at midnight so can't really complain too much.

Ping is a little on the low side, not sure if a router reboot will fix it or if its due to time of day but the connection is always stable. We're moving next year to an area that is yet to be upgraded for Sky Fibre, so the only option is to downgrade to their regular broadband or jump ship with Virgin Media who already have the cables laid. I think the latter is going to be the only option!

I was told a while ago how to improve the ping by turning something lots off on the mobile before starting the app, starting with Skype and then any VPN etc.

If you are on a laptop the find an ethernet cable and wire directly to the hub.

You might also find the Ofcom checker provides a decent comparison check to the 'most popular' app.

Oh, and don't forget to kick the spare phone, Amazon Echo, smart TV/Blu-ray, Chromecast, Sonos, wife, sprogs and the family pet off the line while testing, they can seriously foul up the results.
