Has anyone on here had Broadband with the "up to 8meg" label only to find they get about 2meg?

and has that same person gone to another company and got the full 8meg?

Reason i ask is my line (up to 8 meg) has been getting slower and slower... ive never had the full 8, but i had about 4 once, its down to about 2.5 now? when i rang Zen (my ISP) they blame the phone lines.

but i see companys who promise that they will give you 8meg no matter how far from the exchange you are!

sounds good to me.

im paying £29.99 a month just for the ADSL
to be honest even thats expensive now, everyone else has gone cheaper.

can someone recommend a company?

I've got Pipex Homecall up to 8Meg and most of the time I get just over 6, so not too bad, it is £30 for all phone and Broadband, i believe that they use the Tiscali service at the moment.

I have had a couple of problems as shown by the fifth and sixth readings down, but they seem to have cleared themselves. Like most companies, they are too big and not so sure what they will be like when trying to sort a problem.

I don't think any adsl provider can guarantee to give you the full 8meg no matter how far from the exchange you are, although some cable suppliers promise this.
With adsl you are relying on Bts old and tired phone lines and 4-6 meg is probably the best you would get-on a good day!
I'm still on with Pipex and get around 4-5meg and am about 1/4 mile from exchange.
Pipex are now one of the most expensive and their customer service is rubbish, only staying with them as I am moving abroad soon.-PP

Red,

Zen are without doubt probably one of the best ISP's out there. Sure they cost that little bit extra but for their performance is second to non.

What are your line stats? i.e. Sig Att & SNR
Also which router do you have?

There was multiple problems with the Dragor 2800G with it esp not liking long lines which cause my net speed to be sub 1Mb (128k on occasion).

Went back to my old Netgear DG824M and it's work flawlessly ever since. The DG834GT's are really good i believe as well.(probably what i'll upgrade to)

I cannot disagree with you there

I assume you are referring to the Draytec Vigor 2800G, yes I have heard some very bad reports about that model, we have 6 Vigor 2600 models non WIFI which perform very well on our VPN (hopefully I have not put the kiss of death on them)

Must admit that I was surprised to hear of the problem Red, I would think hardware could play a part, indeed I was having problems at home recently until I changed the microfilter.

2600 have i believe been faultless which is why when i upgraded to 8Mb i choose the 2800, just a shame they have been so unreliable. It's a cracking router with everything i could ever need just the reliability is not there.

Now if they made the 2800G reliable with firmware i'd put it back on, but tbh i believe it's down to the adsl chipset they used within the 2800 and therefore unfixable.

Tried the speedtouch routers but there crap tbh.

I'd still be interested to find out why Red is getting slow connections though.

Ouch your on a really long line with that attenuation.

You could probably go abit quicker with 15db SNR but i'd take uptime over speed anyday.

Don't forget in the old days you wouldn't have even got adsl @ 512.

Hows your line stability?

Stability is up and down.

its better with the router, but before i had the speedtouch USB modem and it disconnected alot

the router probably does, but it must reconnect immedietly.

having said that, there are times when it goes really slow, usually once a week

Slightly slower today

Only other thing i can think of is to look at whats on your line.

Your never going to get great speeds with the line atten you have, but maybe replacing the filters / remove DECT phones might give the stability u require.

Check out _http://www.clarity.it/ they sell the BT engineer face plate which does quite abit to reduce noise on the line. Old DECT phones were a known problem with ADSL. _http://www.clarity.it/xcart/product.php?productid=16134&cat=262&page=1 for the full link.

Other than that there's not much u can do tbh, maybe remove the ringer bell if you in an old house.

Let me know.
