BSkyB's director of mobile, David Gibbs' latest blog post announces the launching of a new BSkyB app for the iPad. The blog post, titled '2012: The year of the tablet?' talks about the new Sky Sports News app as well as the results of research the broadcaster commissioned to Mintel, which aimed to calculate the demand for TV apps on smartphones and tablets.

“Despite the generally gloomy economic outlook, the data shows the British public's appetite for mobile tablets shows no signs of slowing down,” he wrote. “During 2011, as smartphones and tablets became ever more sophisticated, and the quality of the TV experience they can deliver became ever more impressive, we saw an increasing demand from our customers to both watch TV on the move as well as enjoy experiences on companion devices that enhanced their enjoyment of our content... 8% of respondents in our research received a tablet over Christmas, which is on top of the 9% of the British population who already own one (according to Ofcom research released last year). Additionally, 16% intend to purchase a mobile tablet in the year ahead.”

The research also showed that apart from internet access, listening to music, social networking and keeping up to date with news, many people buy tablet computers to watch films and TV shows.

With already over a dozen apps available across Android, iOS, and other smartphone operating systems, the new app for Sky Sports News looks very promising. It offers live streaming of the news channel, streaming of Sky Sports News Radio, on-demand video highlights, a dedicated homepage for each sport, photo galleries, and it lets users set up four favoured football teams on their homepage. What's more is that the app will have an editorial team behind it, customizing the news as it comes.

“The Sky Sports News app is the latest exciting development in the evolution of Sky Sports News, which is now bigger and better than ever before. We aim to be the ultimate sports news service for our customers, and thanks to this new app we can provide them with the latest sports news and in-depth coverage, wherever they happen to be,” said Andy Cairns, Sky Sports News Executive Editor.

The Sky Sports News App for iPad is free for Sky Sports subscribers, though you will need a Sky account to log in. If you are not a subscriber, you can pay £4.99 as a standalone subscription using the Apple iOS subscription system.
