BT is to offer its 19 million residential phone customers the Freeview service - but bundled with a pay-as-you-go internet-via-TV deal.

The package will have a one-off cost of just £129.00. In addition to the Internet package, BT is also offering a non-Internet option providing access to the Freeview service for a one-off payment of £89.99.

Fergus Crockett, managing director of BT's Consumer division, claimed that customers could save £156 in the next two years against the price of the equivalent packages offered by cable company NTL for TV and telephony.

BT has chosen Netgem to supply the Internet-capable set-top box (presumably its i-Player), and Dijam to supply its Setpal standard adapter. Customers will be able to buy the set top boxes direct from BT by calling 0800 800 150 or visiting this link. http://www.bt.com/btdigitaltv
