RAI 1 (11363V) RAI 2 (11446V) RAI 3 (11531V) all ceased transmissions off Hotbird 1 late yesterday evening. They were still operating at 1930 uk time, but were gone just after 2300.

With TV4 closing yesterday as well, the loss of 4 analogue channels is the biggest loss in one day since the bad days of the Sky rundown in 2001

Hey guys my grandparents are Italian and use Hot Bird 1 Anolouge for their RAI needs.

However they can no longer recieve this.

I believe that they have been moved to hot bird 2 broadcasting in DVB. I have an old Sky Digital Box to lend them but they may need a new LNB. Firstly would a Sky box pick up these signals and also i heard that they are to be encrypted in NDS-VideoGuard does this mean that they will not be FTA anymore?

Any help much appreciated

Sports & movies will be scrambled.

A UK digibox will work on these channels, but you would be much better off buying a cheap non Sky digital receiver - otherwise they will be going through the "other channels" faff each time they want to change channels. However, the digibox is better than nothing....

Well some silly in our area is ripping all the Italian people off by getting them a cheap reciever and a universal LNB with a mini dish for £250 or £220 with cash.

I've tried to talk sense into my grandparents but of course as all of the rest of the Italians are getting him to do it they have to likewise.

He's ripping old people off when the job can be done for in my case £4 !!!

You need to set yourself up in business then! :D Even buying a cheap replacement receiver you could probably do it for under 100 quid.

That's called business, I'm afraid. I would most likely be doing the same if I could make a bit of money in it (I'll move to the Lee Valley next week and cash in, methinks!).

No-one's mentioned that the loss of RAI analogue also means the loss of the Discrete "you can almost see it, but not quite" encryption system.

Interestingly, TV Cabo used to have a rebroadcast of RAI analogue on their digital service, even until about a week or two ago (you could tell, because it would be in analogue Discrete scrambling during sports/films. Plus sometimes there would be sparklies on the screen when I presume it was raining heavily around Lisbon!).

But now it's obviously and necessarily a digital feed (there is now only a boring black screen during sports/films).

Sorry but just saw this.

How on earth can you compare a commercial installer with yourself, giving your services and equipment away? You can do the job for £4? Try setting up a business on that basis. :-lmao

He isn't ripping people off, if he provides a dish, LNB, receiver, installation and gurantees it. He needs to make a profit, if the receiver goes wrong, he will have to pick it up and either replace it, or get it repaired, it takes time and equipment to install a system and again the installer is liable if it something happens to cause it to lose focus. The installer is not a public service, he is a business and probably has a mortgage, pays rent, possibly has a family, etc, etc.

i agree rolf. i thought 250 was a fair price for a full installation.cables and f-connectors arent free either.the guy thats selling them for 4 quid,if you can do that,i could send loads of jobs for you to do your way.
