Has anyone found a successful way to call Sky from abroad to upgrade/downgrade subscriptions etc?

I know I can't call directly from outside the UK even if I disable caller id since the call will be flagged as international. Does anyone know a UK-based callback service or other indirect method that I can use to call that will flag the call to Sky as "number withheld" but inside UK.

TIA,

stoobee

Have you thought about using Skype or similar?

I've done it many times from a Spanish landline (Telefonica) with mo problems, making no attempt to hide the caller ID.

I can't guarantee you will have the same success, but I've yet to meet someone who has actually had a problem calling from abroad (pretending to be in the UK of course). There are many stories about 'a friend who told me about this guy who got his subscription cancelled' etc, but never a first hand story.

But, if you are worried, as suggested Skype or a UK mobile are probably the only options :)

I have a UK mobile but I will only use this as a last resort since at 60p/min it's too expensive. I can call from a fixed line to the UK for 1 cent/min. Let's hope the commission finally forces mobile operators to reduce their roaming charges.

I read some people successfully used Skype. Can anybody tell me what is reported when calling 1471 after receiving a Skype call. If it says something along the lines of "we do not have the caller's number" then it's an international call. I see there's also other VoIP providers like voipdiscount.

i think sky are unlikely to ring 1471 after your call...

i wonder what would happed if you dialled the +44 and then connected to a directory enquiries service.... say BT

asked for the number to ring Sky, then when they ask if you would like to be put through, say yes??

would the number be still shown as a international or a directory enquiries redirect?

other than than, then the mobile phone option looks favourite

I've been ringing them from Italy for years, disabling caller id on a landline. Never a problem.

I can only agree with some previous posts. I too have disabled caller i.d and rung with no probs from Germany. If you disable caller i.d they wont flag it as an international call, how can they?

If you're afraid that they will cut your subscription based on using a non UK landline number, does it then really matter that the call from you uk mobile is 60p a min? If you're put on hold for (let's say) 10 min, this will set you back £6 and wouldn't that be worth it?

Can't really see what all the fuzz is about :)

I use SIPGate.co.uk and have a Linksys PAP2 and a regional telephone number similar to my "address" ;)

Never had to use it mind you :)
And no you can't connect the modem in the box to it - yet - as the codecs on the SIP service don't support data (how ironic on VoIP 'O' )

I'd like some advice in this area also. I have an IllusionSat M3, so I don't know if it will take a SKY card (probably not according to other posts).

I'd like to call Sky (from Slovakia) and ask for help. I'm willing to pay for a subscription or whatever, and I can call using my Skype, but will they need a return phone number? a UK address?

If someone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. THX.

You need a postal address in either Ireland or the UK. Your receiver also needs to be at hand as SKY needs the serial number, EPG version etc.

When you receive the card you need to call sky and get the card activated based on the digibox data mentioned above...

Good Luck :-)

PS. You need a specific SKY digibox (NDS UK Version) to be able to use the SKY card...
