O-Ha Insanity looming! O-Ha
I’m just about ready to say sod it to a motorised set up unless you guys can tell me where I’m going wrong.
I started about 3 weeks ago and very quickly managed to get half a dozen birds from Thor1W to Astra 28E but nothing west. My motor was mounted on a double 90^ cranked mount (sort of "S" shape) and I figured that the weight of the motor and dish must have pulled the mount off vertical, so I swung the whole lot through 180^ and reset vertical but only found Thor 1W and Hotbird 13E. After a lot of fiddling about I abandoned the cranked mount and replaced it with a straight pole.
Now I cant find Thor, my true south bird, pointing just E of S my SLx sat meter goes off the scale, but the meter on the TV only shows a level 76% quality 0% and no matter where I point the dish in that general direction can I get a better signal.
In setting up the motor I have used both USALS and Disqec 1.2 and before each change I have cleared down all the scanned sat channels.
I have read a lot of the threads but the more I read and change the worse things seem to be getting, hence ready to quit.
Does the STB retain it previous setting if yes what should I do?
Will putting a damp cloth over the LNB reduce its sensitivity and stop the sat meter going off scale?
Apoligies for going on but please help.
^ = degrees

If your new straight pole is perfectly vertical and you have correctly set your latitude/elevation on the motor assembly, then you need to set your motor to zero (or a couple of degrees East) and then manually move the whole assembly one the pole and adjusting the dish elevation, try and find 1W. Does the meter not have an attenuator on it?

Hi nomad...
When you reset your setup to the verticle pole did you adjust your alignment angle..I had the same issue and just a couple of mm made all the difference...my dish and motor were on the same type of original setup you had and I changed to a verticle pole got everything level and verticle.pulled in a great signal strenght but no quality until I adjusted my alignment..
hope this helps..
cheers

The pole is vertical, I fitted it because it now pulls straight on the mounting bolts where as before it had a tendancy to twist the bracket on the bolts if you get my drift.
The meter has an attenuator on it and when its turned up to it highest setting the needle still goes past 10 (max)
I have used a simular procedure each time and have not moved the motor elevation it's set at 54 for my lat. when I got a max reading before everything was fine when I looked at the TV meter.
Does the STB retain any info and what about the wet rag I read this in one of the threads

Are you trying to find the satellite by moving the motor with the receiver?

Hi Rolfw
I think I might have been paranoid about the vertical but now i'm sure it true but I' only using a builders spirit level !
I've tried both ways to do set up 1st I set the motor to zero then move the motor on the mount to get the highest reading then adjust the dish angle.
then 2nd I tried using USALS on Thor 1W which gives a reading of 2.3E then try again. Both methods give full reading on the sat meter but the reading given on the TV are as my 1st post.
The reason for asking about the STB holding info is that the more I try the more it seems to get worse and for the damp cloth is to get the best sat meter signal before coming down the ladder to look at the tele. I used to get the misses to give me the reading over the mobile but she's now totally fed up and thinks I'm crazy.
thanks for the replies so far

A damp cloth will certainly reduce the signal to the meter, it might though be too much power being drawn by the motor causing the meter to go full scale, so leave the motor out of the loop, this may reduce the reading on the meter.

Thanks Rolfw I will try that tomorrow, what about the STB holding previous info on settings ie when using 1.2 I used the store button?

If in doubt, go back to factory default settings, then you start from scratch. :)

Spent another frustrating day going up and down the ladder.
As youv'e gathered i'm a persistant newbie when rolfw mentioned attenuator I thought what the f***'s that, so I googled it so's not to look a complete noobo.
But just to be sure were talking the same lingo can you confirm its a little rotary knob on the sat finder that you adjust to keep the needle within the 1 to 10 scale, and when you get a max signal youv'e usually found a bird, but it could be any bird that depends on the angle the dish and the bird showing on the STB?
I wired the meter direct to the LND as suggested no difference but the damp cloth worked, found Thor 0.8W but not Thor 1W I think my problem is the TPS number in the STB.

0.8 is fine, that is in fact the true location, yes, the little knob is the attenuator.

So having now found Thor, you should be part way towards the nirvana of a perfect arc. :)

Thx for your help got Astra 28E and Hotbird 13E on USALS plus 3 useless channels on Thor 0.8w but still nothing West. I'm going to leave it at that for now, well till the misses thinks i've regained my sanity. Going to keep studying TPS's though I still think it part of the problem.
Cheers

Think i've cracked it, as I suspected its the TPS setting in the STB if the tps in the stb setup screen isn't shouting you wont hear it.
I put working tps in the edit menu then bingo got a signal. It seems so simple now why dont the manuals tell you this?
Can you guys tell me did Fortec mix me a bottle with the transponder setting or should I have checked them to start with.

Hi Nomad,
i've just read your initial post and it's seems odd that you were getting 76% signal and 0%quality on the receiver. -this suggests that the "skew" is wrong on the lnb, i.e. the lnb needs to be rotated clockwise or anti-clockwise to peak the signal/quality. Note that the skew changes depending on where the dish is looking so unless you have a system with variable skew you should set it for the Thor signal as a compromise.
hope this helps
