OK hands up. Who remembers the launch of Channel 4 in late 1982?? A 4th channel - WOW - seems ridiculous now doesnt it??

Hers the youtube clip of the trade announcements prior to start up "from the transmitters of the Independant Broadcasting Authority"

And heres the actual startup sequence at 4.45pm on November 2nd 1982 with the famous blocks ident spinning into view for the first time :D

The nice music behind the images is called 4score and was written by David Dundas This is the full version and apparently was only played in full 3 times. Normally they used a short 4 note sting from it.

4score is rare as hens teeth on the net but I have tracked down an mp3 version. If anyone wants it pm me your email address.

Its not brilliant quality but its not too bad - 96 kbps

Yeah - along with the old Central ITV globes I think the C4 blocks are still a design classic. It also left itself perfectly wide open for spoofing - Ive found the 1980's Hamlet piss take:

I wont put it directly up as its a tobacco product but heres the link

:-rofl2

Id love to see C4 bring back some updated variants of the spinning blocks :D

Apparently David Dundas was a sly old bugger. He kept hold of the copyrights for the 4 note C4 stings,so every time C4 ran an ident it cost them a couple of quid.

Every week for 10 years DD got a cheque for a thousand quid!
