A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

Two customers in a week have mentioned the price of their printer ink cartidges are more than the later printers are, one is an Epson XP series 400, not sure of the other until Wednesday but the cartidge is not an '18' as used in the first. I've had success refilling cartridges before now but with HP items
Clever buggers at Epson have a level chip in each cartridge that tells the printer to stop if low (not actually empty) and won't restart until purchase of more ink. Wonderful

As per the advert below

Is there a universal one out there, or perhaps a method of fooling the printer the cartridges are actually new when they are not ?

You could try searching YouTube as I have found similar information for other brands of printers.

Not quite the answers I was looking for, I was looking for an all in one solution for the modern Epson stuff so I don't have to search/order the right cartridges each time

Yes, the XP series can be satisfied by non OEM cartridges, and more. There is a dealer about four miles from here that does the whole CIS thing at - what looks like - a bargain as well

Whether the client can put up with pipes and canisters sitting in the lounge is another matter.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

CISS kits are useful for people who print out a lot of photo-quality prints, if not, then they suffer just the same amount of problems as regular cartridges with clogged heads and wasted ink...

I'm a very light printer so my £36 investment in my 2nd-hand HP colour laserjet printer a few years back has already paid off with not having to buy new ink every time I needed to print something, I know it's not the best solution for everyone, but it makes me happy at least... :)

I have totally given up on ink printers and rip off prices for cartridges and bought a laser printer. Has lasted a year so far with moderate printing with no end in sight for the toner. Much less hassle and better print quality.

I did the same some 5 or 6 years ago, I paid £10 for a second hand black Samsung ML-2580N laser printer that would not communicate via USB, I have it set up as a network printer via cat 5 and have just ordered my third drum/toner unit for it so to date have done some 4000+ copies on it. Cheap as chips

Like CJ & Topper, we've been using (mono in our case) laser printers of various types (2x basic HP Lasergets, a couple of Samsung ML1600s, then an MN2825 and now an MN2835 - because that uses the same toner cartridges & drums as the 2825 and I had a stock of those when the latter failed) for years - not too expensive to buy, and dirt cheap to run with cheap aftermarket toner cartridges &/or refilling the old ones.

There was/is always an inkjet for the small amount of colour stuff - now always Canon after a disasterous episode with Epson (the usual blocked heads syndrome if you dont' use them very regularly) - but that's not used anywhere as much as the lasers.
